hello again, my speedometer stopped working again, 1980 camaro, the speedometer wasnt workin when i bought it but it started to work for a short time after i used a longer cable and bypassed the cruise control by going straight from the tranny to the speedometer. then it stopped working, the clip to hold the cable to the speedometer seems tight and i cant push the cable any further on but it seems like it should be on further. is there something i did wrong?

Does the speedometer work if you spin the cable with an electric drill at the trans side of the cable? Try that and see. I guess the good thing is that you now know that the Cruise control box is not the problem. I suspect it's the speedometer that is binding up causing the cable to break if that's indeed what happen.

k i will try that, for the short time i got it working the needle would bouce varying about 10 miles an hour off of where it shouldve been and there was this squeeking noise that would come from behind the dash, dont know if that would mean anything or not.

It sounds like it's time for a new speedometer.

If the speedo jumping, the cable is bad or has to sharp of a bend in it. What happens is it winds up, like a spring, then releases causing the jumping. The speedometer is probably fine, you just need a new cable properly installed

i took the cable off of the tranny and the inside cable was corkscrewed. i have the cable running straight from the tranny, up and making a u turn in order to get to the firewall. i did that so i could bypass the cruise control. how sharp a curve can the cable be at without it messing stuff up? thanks for your help by the way.

If you have to make to sharp of a bend, get a longer cable. They sell them in diff lengths. All bends should be gentle.
