What would you fry if you accidently reversed the cables on the battery?
The regulator, Altanator, or the battery. It just sparked for a quick moment and now the Gen light comes on at an idle but goes away after you raise the RPM

all of the above most likely

Battery should be fine, most likley blew the diodes in the Alernator, and if you have an external regulator that needs to be checked to see if you melted the resistors or burned points inside of it.

I'm betting just a diode.
They can be replaced, and any decent auto parts store can order them in for you, or maybe this is an excuse for a new alternator?

If u are going to do a diode, may as well do the bearings at the same time, couple bucks, get the armeture turned off, set of brushes wouldnt hurt...
Hmmm just reconditioned it lol
Oh when its out, and have the case, give it a good wire wheel, then good going over with emery paper, finish with 280 grit.
By a buffing wheel put it in the drill, bit of kero and cutting compound, polish it or just polish the bits that can be seen.
So now u have a polished recon alternator.

Original 68 61 amp delco alternator, worked over as Steptoe described:
