i have a 67 ss/rs 396. the vin tag has been moved from the front door pillar to the back on the drivers side sometime in the past apparentley by the dmv because it isn't the original tag. it does appear to have the original 123XXX number but it has another number under it for dmv records ( i guess). i was told that in the past if the original tag got damaged the dmv would verify the numbers then issue a replacement and purposley move it to verify they did it with no funny buisness. has anyone else heard of this and does this de-value the car? the cowl tag describes ss/rs 396 325 hp with auto. thanks

Devalued yes. Anything that puts doubt in a buyers mind devalues the car.

Vin 123xxx would be a 6 banger.

First, if the "original VIN" starts "123" and the cowl tag has a 4N for the 396/325, the two did not start out on the same car. A third VIN digit of 3 indicates the VIN started on a 6 cyl car.

At that point, I'd want to check the hidden VINs on top of the cowl (can be seen through cowl vent grille panel, if it hasn't corroded away or been covered over) and under the blower motor (only visible if the car is disassembled). Something isn't right.

In general, the process you're asking about (reissue of a VIN by a state DMV) varies state by state, so we'd have to know where you are to say if it's the norm for that state.

But again, either the original VIN or the trim tag your asking about has been changed...

the vin is actually 124377Dxxxxxx

Another typo? There would be no "D" in the real VIN. Only an L or N which stands for Los Ang., CA or Norwood, OH where the 2 plants were that made the first gens.

or D for Deleware (or DMV, or dismantled, meaning a reassembled car or some other code), a state issued VIN as stated above ...

ill take a pic and try to post. its painted over though in red so i dont know what the color is really didn't want to scrape of the paint because it would really stand out like a sore thumb everytime i got in the vehicle. hey rusty69 now that you mention it i remember seeing that blu tag on vehicles in the past but didn't know that it had to be salvaged to recieve such tag thought there could be other reasons.

Here in NY when an insurance co. has paid out a total loss on the car the VIN is removed and a yellow sticker is affixed to the B pillar with a replacement NY VIN number. the number is sequenial (no spell ck sorry) so it really doesnt tell you anything about the car. We also do that on Jeep rebodies and pick up cab changes etc...

there are two other places where the vin is on the car , I would do a title search on the car from that vin. And ask the pior owners what happend to it, so you can have documentation, that would help the value becuase if it was stolen vs a salvage rebuild make a differents to most people, also that would give you a better history phil

I look up under the cowl grill it's kind of hard to see but it appears the last 4 numbers match exactly there is an L before the number in the cowl and it has been changed to a D on the vin. the vin matches the title exactly.

Tag has some of the traits of a repop IMO, and yes that is a state issued VIN plate.....
