I've recently bought a 69 convt. with an aftermarket volt meter. Where do the wires connect to?? I was told poss. goes to the battery, and the neg. is grounded under the dash. When I attempt to connect to the battery, I'm getting a spark (shorting out) Any help...please???

The voltmeter positive connection "can" be connected to any hot lead on the car. I usually use the ignition circuit so the gauge powers off when I turn off the key.

Are you talking a spark when you connect the main battery cable, or something added? A big spark or a little one?

A little spark would not be unusual if the car's door is open, or if there is a modern stereo or clock in it.

Is it a "Voltmeter" or an Ampmeter ???

If its a voltmeter just hook a hot lead into fuse panel ignition, so it only comes on when car is on, and then just make sure you hook up a good ground. Should work fine

I hook my voltmeters directly to the battery hot lead so they are on all the time so I don't have to turn on the key to see if the battery is up to voltage.

I've tried several times to hook it up to different hot wires...same thing. After looking at the gauge, it only has a pic of a battery. with a 60 on each side of the needle, and a 0 inthe middle.

That is a AMP guage not a VOLT guage. You have to put it in series with the main power wire to see how many amps your circuits are drawing. You need to connect it between the #10 wire that goes from the battery to the terminal block on the firewall behind the battery.

I personally do not like a amp guage. I would install a volt guage. The reason it is sparking is because the current goes thru the guage and when you ground one side and connect 12vdc to the other side it is a dead short.

I agree...I dont figure why cars have ampmeters, they dont really tell As much usefull info as what a voltmeter does.

Ah....That makes sense. I'll have to find a volt meter that works with the other gauges. Thanks alot for the help!
