View Full Version : 69 Z28 stripes again!!
Handy69Z Jul 18th, 03, 07:45 PM I was just sitting around this evening and decided to look at my stencil kit I got from Rick's First Gen. From the instructions that come with it I'm supposed to make the trunk stripes un-even. The pass. side stripe is about 5/16 wider than the drivers side. Is this what everyone is doing? Or is it better to make them both the same? I could widen the drivers side to match if there is a problem with the emblem on the pass. side.. couldn't I??? Thanks for the imput guys!!
stingr69 Jul 19th, 03, 04:48 AM I am having my car painted with the dimensions shown on sheet B2 of UPC Z28 from the factory assembly manual. It does not specify the stripes as different from one side to the other. The trunk stripes ARE different widths when measuring from the front to back on the trunk lid. 14.7" wide at the rear of the trunk (including the .25" pinstripe) and 14.98" wide at the forward part of the trunk lid. The gap between the main stripe and the pinstripe is .38" but if I were you, I would get a copy of the assembly manual and look at that section as well as use the stencil if you want to get the stripes correct. smile.gif

troy-curt Jul 19th, 03, 05:01 AM I always paint them the same from side to side.
They do taper from front to rear. The trickyest part is, do they extend beyond the spoiler, or end under it.
It would be interesting to hear every ones opinion.
Troy,
zuma Jul 19th, 03, 06:45 AM Troy, Welcome to the site. If the rear spoiler was installed from the factory, then the stripes stopped at the bottom of the spoiler. If it was added at the dealer, then the spoiler was painted and striped, then added to the car to match the existing striping, thus the stripe extended to the trunk. I guess it comes down to personel preference... John, I did not add a rear emblem, The less holes, the better I figured. I Hope this helps you a little... Check out my sig , I stopped my striping at the bottom of the spoiler...Mike :D
William Jul 19th, 03, 10:42 AM Camaros were striped with the spoiler installed. Hooper's book has a photo of an OE lid, spoiler removed, and the stripes on the lid end at the front of the spoiler.
Kyvox Jul 19th, 03, 11:52 AM I don't think they were painted after installation. The very bottom of the spoiler, the "L" shaped section where it meets the deck lid, is not painted the stripe color. It would be hard to paint the deck lid stripe, and not get paint on this area.
Handy69Z- I've never used the 69 stencils. Is one of the upper rear ones wider than the other? If you are going by the detailed drawing of of the layout, realize that one dimention is for the overall stripe, and the other is for just the center section. At least that's the way it shows on the 67-68 drawing.
troy-curt Jul 19th, 03, 03:44 PM Sounds like every one pretty well has the rear deck stripes down right. I thought there would be more imput on them.
I worked at a chev. dealership when the 69s came out. I did most of the dealer option installation and high performance work. My pet project was the ZL1 fully optioned(the only one)Camaro.I replaced the short block in that ZL1, guess what happened to that warrented eng.he he,It had lost the oil filter and scored the cylinders.
Have a good day,

What we think does not matter. Just the facts, please. When you have some time I will lead you to a few OE paint '69 Z/28s. There is no stripe paint under the spoiler. There is a color photo of an OE paint Z/28 lid on page 68 of Hooper's book and that is how they were done.
Kyvox Jul 20th, 03, 07:11 PM Well....I wouldn't say that an assumption made from seeing a picture in a book is necessarily a "fact" either. Maybe a template of the spoiler was used.
