View Full Version : what gears to use? kennys Apr 20th, 06, 07:26 AM I have a 67 with a pg and about 600 hp what rear gears would be best for me? this is mainly a show car,but will be driven on weekend and such. thanks for any help, Kenny Mike68RS Apr 20th, 06, 08:03 AM Kenny, What gears you have in there now? 10 bolt or 12 bolt? Do you do a fair amount of expressway driving? Mike Larger Dave Apr 20th, 06, 05:02 PM At 600 horse and a 'glide I'm assuming a big block and a Furd 9" (your looking at about the upper limit of the 12 bolt at around 650 horse). With a 9" you buy as many gears as you want (or can afford) and swap them like dirty shorts. Larger Dave kennys May 2nd, 06, 09:17 AM it still has the 10 bolt in it now I havent switched it out yet its a blown small block 383.I havent put the engine back in the car yet. will a 10 bolt handle this? I dont know any thing about rear ends but i can build a monster engine. Thanks Kenny Straight-line-69 May 2nd, 06, 09:53 AM On our first gens, anything with 275 or more flywheel HP got 12-bolts from the general,..and for a reason. The 8.2's would grenade with little effort. At 600 HP and slicks, even a 9-inch needs to be beefed up with top-drawer parts. A 12-bolt would be ok with street tires. pdq67 May 2nd, 06, 06:49 PM I dearly love my 12-bolt's 3.31's.. pdq67 kennys May 3rd, 06, 07:34 AM thanks for the help. kenny BPOS May 3rd, 06, 12:24 PM I dearly love my 12-bolt's 3.31's.. pdq67 You mean it's on the road?!? 68rs406 May 3rd, 06, 06:10 PM Agreed about needing to change rears if its a factory 8.2, but an 8.5 10 bolt with good parts will handle that easily. Even the 8.2 will last awhile on the street, but the first time it hooks hard at a track, its on seriously borrowed time. One other thing, dont doubt the strength of a 12 bolt. 600 horse with a decent 12 bolt is no problem, IMO. Esp. in a fairly light car. The car we race (or raced, its sold) ran a 12 bolt that was narrowed, had mark williams axles and a moroso brute strength diff. for years. It served flawlessly with the car in the 8's, but when it started going 7's, the car developed a wicked lean, and when the rear end was pulled the case looked something like a pretzel. But, this didn't occur untill 7.70's in a 3500 pound car (and 1.19 60' times), that made 1100 horse on the motor, plus about a 500 horse shot of nitrous. No doubt this was pushing the 12 bolt and then some, but my point is, they are tough as hell! |
