Not sure about the 72 but I just started a suspension rebuild on my 68. The jack stands are placed just behind the front wheels on the frame. It allowed me to get to all of the parts AND use my floor jack to operate the control arm/coil springs to safely remove all of the suspension componants.

BTW...leaving the shock attached on the bottom while lowering the bottom control arms assures the spring will not JUMP OUT AT YOU. Romverd the top nut and slowly removed the pressure from the coils. Most folks on this foum recommend cloil compression tools and/or wiring the coils to the frame before attempting removal. Your life is more important than a short cut...use your best judgement..just saying this worked very well for my situation.

Hope this helps.

Yes the drag link can cause loose steering, there is a joint that attaches to the idler arm and the pitman arm that can wear and get loose.

As for raising the car, get it as high as you can and support it by the subframe rails, allowing the ft wheels to hang freely. The stand should be far enough in to allow you to get a floor jack under the lower ball joint to support it while you are working with the spring.

By all means, secure the spring somehow, such as a spring compressor or chaining it to the frame, so that if it pops loose it won't hurt you. There is a lot of energy stored in the spring and it can do some SERIOUS damage if you are not VERY careful.

The rest of the rebuild should be fairly straightforward. I like ft end work cause I get to use a really big hammer and relieve some stress!!
