I have a muncie M20 transmission and bought a Hurst Compitition Plus shifter...I installed everything per the instructions, but the shift pattern or distance from like 2nd to third gear is really long. in other words, when I shift from 2nd to 3rd gear I really have to lean quite a bit to put it into 3rd gear. Can anyone tell me if this is typical of the transmission or is this the shifter? How or what is the best way to fix this problem?

thanks...

Shorter stick? I was thinking that all trans shift arms were generic on the Muncie, but could I be wrong? Are you using the bolt stops? That helps too.

No, it seems like it is a normal stick, and yes, I used the stop bolts and adjusted them per the instructions...basically it said Install shifter stop bolts. Adjust stop bolts by backing both out of shifter frame until only a few threads remain engaged. Push stick firmly into 3rd gear and hold it. Screw 3rd gear stop bolt in until contact is made. Back bolt out one turn and tighten jam nut. Pull stick firmly back into 4th gear. Screw 4th gear stop bolt in until
contact is made, then back it out one turn and tighten jam nut.

I would say post the shifter numbers and linkage kit numbers to see if its right for that trans. I have the Hurst Compitition Plus shifter and don't have to reach that far.

The shifter is the Hurst Compitition plus shifter part number 3734529 and I used the linkage kit that was on the car already...

The holes on the shift arm, (side of thetransmission) are too far apart, this is causing the extra long throw on the shifter, common mistake is that they have to point upwards, not down, if the holes are not in a straight line on the 3/4 shift arm ( front of the side case) try flipping the arm around, readjust the linkage,

Compare the two shift arms the holes should be relatively the same distance apart, the reverse arm is very short in comparison to the other two.

That is the shifter I bought...I am not sure if there is a paticular linkage kit that goes with it...I used the one that was on there from a previous shifter that did not fit into the hole in the hump...I had to buy the new shifter and it fit into the hole, so I am pretty sure it is the correct shifter, I guess maybe I have the wrong linkage? Is that possible?

Are you sure what number you have? In the quote from your post you have a different number than what I have posted ???

Actually, I did get the installation kit with the rods...the linkage kit number from Jegs was 530-373-4529 and the shifter number was 530-391-4339. I guess I quoted the wrong part number. I am wondering if there is a way to adjust the throw using the linkage somehow? This is the info on the shifter from Jegs

Try this...
Remove the clips and pull the pivots out of the levers. With the trans and shifter in neutral, insert the gauge through the holes in all shifter levers and leave in place. Now adjust the pivots as required so they will go into the pivot holes in the shifter levers, then tighten the locknuts or reinstall the clips. On Hurst shifters this will entail turning the pivots on the threaded rods to move them. Remove the gauge from the levers and shift through all gears. Shift into neutral again and insert the gauge. It should slip through all levers. Now is a good time to tighten the trans shift lever retaining nuts or bolts at the trans side cover.
On Hurst shifters with stop bolts, here’s the method of adjustment on those. Loosen the locknuts and back off the stop bolts until just a few threads remain engaged. Shift the shifter firmly into third gear, then tighten the rear stop bolt until light contact is made with the shifter lever. Back off the bolt one full turn and tighten the locknut. Now shift the shifter firmly into fourth gear and adjust the front stop bolt the same way. See if this helps....
