: Which Transmission?
newbe60 Apr 23rd, 06, 12:32 PM my 68 convert is all set for an ls-2 this winter.. need a tranmission.. cart will be only street driven.. has a 3.70 ford 9" rear.. 17" rims .. looking for a RELIABLE and easy fix and install transmission.. decision is down to the folowing 3
700r4
200r4 or
4L60E
TJS69 Apr 23rd, 06, 01:06 PM An ls-2 will require a computer to control it. A 460LE is the only automatic for it.
BonzoHansen Apr 23rd, 06, 02:27 PM I would agree with the 460, but I thought you could put a 'standard' trans, like a 700 or 300, behind it. Maybe check www.ls1tech.com
fatrat96 Apr 23rd, 06, 03:26 PM go with a tremec t - 56 6 speed.. i just installed one in a 67 and it is a whole new car to drive.. pile of torgue and overdive..
TJS69 Apr 24th, 06, 10:07 AM A 460 is basicly a 700 with electronic shift. The 700r4 and the 200 are TV cable controlled. I don't know if you can get a bracket for the TV cable that would fit an LS engine.
newbe60 Apr 24th, 06, 07:50 PM The LS engine can be made to work for either
Vintage 68 Apr 25th, 06, 11:13 AM :D How about a 5L50 or a 6L80 ???
JimM May 20th, 06, 06:21 AM sorry, IMHO none of the choices involve the proper (3) number of pedals.

jakeshoe May 20th, 06, 11:43 AM You could also use a 4L80E for extreme ruggedness, but the 4L60E would work for your application.
I wouldn't use a 700 or 200 behind an LS motor.
pdq67 May 20th, 06, 04:10 PM Jake,
Did we ever figure out about the top hp limit most of the "PRO-BUILT" 700's will take??
I'm thinking 450 pound foot here??
Please correct me if I am too low.....

67SS&99SS Jun 8th, 06, 01:35 PM If the LS2 has a cam in it or a good set of aftermarket heads, then you will need a 4L80E. 4L60Es are not known for their strength. If I were you I would go with a T56 6 speed. I've got an LS1 Camaro SS with the 4L60E and I've drove my friends 6 speed Z28s and Trans Ams and there is no comparison. Go 6 speed!

Still not the right number of pedals, but I gotta question that statement on the strength of the 4L60. They are used in all auto trans vette's, and in all 1/2 ton or less pickups and SUV's, including some big 400 HP trucks. Mine's gone 70k hard miles, never missed a beat, never got any maintenance.
Also aren't the 4L80's huge by large? as in the only way to get one into a firstgen is with a cutting torch set on kill?
newbe60 Jun 24th, 06, 09:46 PM a 4l65E may be a happy medium.. I just bought a new one.. just asked for the 2005 GTO transmission .. seems a bit stronger then the 4l60E and the exterior is the same as the 4l60E so no cutting..

I will install one after I blow my M-20 if I thought that one could be built to hold 600 t............... Otherwise, I figure a 200 is the only way to go...............

Maroon Jun 26th, 06, 03:38 PM If you go with the 4L60E it has a weak "sunshell". There are upgrades for that if you go with that trans. Those are now available. My son pulls a trailor with a YANMAR diesel tractor on it, 200,000 miles on it, upgraded no problems. (YANMAR = ford 9N tractor)
