I was wondering what I could substitute for the por15 products; metal prep, marine clean, por 15.
I heard that there is a chassis saver made by magnet paints for 20 buck cheaper a gallon. I know metal prep is just a degreaser and cleaner and many things would work but I just dont want to assume anything.

Metal ready is nothing more than Phosphoric(sp?) acid and zinc. The acid etches the metal and leaves a protective coating.POR is a moisture cured paint that is supposed to be water and air tight. So the etched rust sealed with the POR should stop the rust. I use Dupont 5717 metal conditioner(phosphoric acid)I get it locally for about $10 a quart and its mixed with two parts water giving you three quarts.Let it soak on the area or panel fifteen minutes or scrub with a scotch brite pad for heavy rust, wipe it off while its still wet. It leaves the metal looking blue and a slight white powdery look(like metal ready does) Then i use epoxy prime over it.(water/air tight). Same deal as POR/Metal Etch.A lot cheaper. I have also been using 5717 and SEM Rust Guard($20/QT) which is a lot like POR, in areas where brushing is easier, like down inside quarters, frame rails ect.I don't know how the Rust Guard is going to last long term, but its the same technology as POR.Etch the rust, then seal it.Oh by the way, Castrol Super Clean is better than Marine Clean and about $8 a gallon at Wal-Mart. smile.gif

Wow yeah that is exactly what I was looking for. I knew there was something that was really close for cheaper.
I looked around, do you mean Rust shield? Thanks again.
