I chose to start a seperate thread rather than tck this o my junk yard wheel thread.

OK....I am currently in need of a larger diameter wheel on my 68 Camaro (I currently have 15" OEM Rally's but the rears won't fit over my new rear disk brakes)......but...next year I will be mini-tubing the car to fit wider wheels in the back. Along with mini-tubing, I'll might be narrowing the axle by about an inch or two on each side so I don't have to run crazy backspacing on the wheels.

Before I mini-tub, I plan on going as wide as 17" 275/40's. After mini-tub, I plan on going as wide as 17" 315/40's. So my question is ....Can both of these tire widths be run on the same width wheel?

If yes...what is a good wheel width and backspacing to run with both tire sizes that won't cause me to rub on the wheel wells, shocks, leaf springs, etc. prior to mini-tubing?

I've y High Performance a couple years back, that with the stock wheel wells, I could run 17" 275/40's in back on 9.5" wheels with 5.5" back spacing, and in the front I could run 17" 245/40's on 8.5" wheels with 5" back spacing.

Any thoughts?
Tim

This should have said, "I read in Chevy High Performance..."
I accidentally deleted some text before posting....

www.tirerack.com lists 315/35 r 17 as fitting on a 10.5 to 12.5" rim, so i would say, no it wouldnt fit on a 9.5" wide rim

btw, they dont have any 315/40 and the 35 series is 25.7" tall which is about normal for a 1st gen

and those specs you listed from chevy hi perf look about right as far as rim width and backspacing (I would go with a 8" wide rim in the front not an 8.5" from what I have read here)
