View Full Version : no title cars?
2518speck Apr 26th, 06, 10:27 AM hello to everyone, great site. i have a question. i have an all original x11 car with the tags and title in my name. the car is too far gone to save because the rust is so bad that everything including the frame rails and subframe are gone. is there any legal way of using the tags and title on a rust free project car that has no title. im not sure of the laws on this and i dont want to do anything wrong. i see people selling tags and titles all the time on ebay. any help would gladly be appreciated. thanks
choptop Apr 26th, 06, 10:50 AM In some cases you can legally "re-body" a car by swapping a new body or salvaged car body onto the old car's frame. I would check with your local dmv or dot and see what hoops you might need to jump through to make sure it is permissable and legitimate before you try anything.

Legal... not that I know of. Swapping a VIN is frowned on by most if not all state DMV's, because of vehicle theft issues. Besides, 67-69 Camaros and most other cars from some year on have hidden VIN stampings. It's one of the first things we look at on a suspect car.
When the 69 (and other years) repo body shells become widely available, swapping is going to occur. None of us knows how states are going to handle that. Some folks will say those will need to have DMV issued VINs like any kit car, and others take the approach that a complete body shell is just a rust repair "panel" like replacing the dash top or a quarterpanel, and that an original GM VIN and title should be able to be used. Those cars won't have hidden VINs, and there are other ways to spot them as well.
As for the last part of the statement that I quoted, it gets talked about a lot here and generally makes a lot of folks nuts. A VIN is issued to a particular car, and moving them around is asking for trouble (IMO).

not everybody can, but some can..

AlexFolino Apr 26th, 06, 03:35 PM In my opinion no camaro is to far gone, where there is a will theres a way! As for the title, i bet the dmv is going to give you hell trying to do that and probably will disallow it.

2518speck Apr 26th, 06, 07:00 PM thanks for the info, i will probably take what parts i need from the car and resell it, maybe someone else will be able to tackle it but it is too much for me. as for my car without a title, has anyone ever used the broadway title co to get a title, if so what steps have to be taken to do this. thanks
corbetts_auto Apr 26th, 06, 08:09 PM Here is a C&P from the federal code as one of the reason you can remove a VIN:
a person who repairs such vehicle or part, if the removal,
obliteration, tampering, or alteration is reasonably necessary
for the repair;
You can find it here:

Legally you are fine..but as mentioned, it is HIGHLY frowned upon in the industry. And to reiterate what has already been said...there are very few cars that are unrepairable. Many times it is unfeasible if you have to pay some one to do it....It can be very labor intesive...but it i do-able
