I'm changing gears in my 8.5 10 bolt pretty soon, when my new driveshaft arrives, and wanted to know while it was apart, if you suggest anything in particular to do to my factory posi unit.
Its a clutch type GM piece (with the S spring, not the ratchet) and it actually has worked flawlessly. But since Its coming out, what would you suggest I do, if anything I guess, to improve its life/durability. I figure no time like now to freshen it or ?
For reference, its a street car, but definately leaning towards drag car.
I appreciate any and all suggestions, thanks in advance

Keeping the clutches shimmed tight is important. This will help durring burnouts and it will also help the gears live longer.

Thanks for the reply.
So basically, check the clutches and shim tight, and, replace pinion bearing, gears, and go?
Thanks again.

That should do it. Get a complete installation kit when you get the gears so you will have all of the parts to set it up right.

Thanks for your help Freddie, I really appreciate it. When this factory posi gives up, I'll be in touch with you about an Eaton.
Thans again.

I just pulled my 8.5 posi apart to change gears and it NEEDED new carrier bearings. I took the clutches out and looked at them and they were shiny, so I ordered new ones. I paid 108 for them and once I got them I am glad I bought them, the old clutches are definately worn.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll replace the clutches, and check the rest out. Its a pretty recent rebuild really, so I doubt my bearings will be bad, but if they are questionable i'm replacing them, its easier now than later. The only reason its coming apart is for a gear change.
From renton huh? cool, ever make it out to pacific (SIR)? Nice looking car by the way

I have been to Pacific Raceways a lot, but usually on my motocross bike!

I got my new bearings and clutches yesterday and had the carrier bearings changed today. I am going to take everything to a shop tomorrow and get their opinion on my axles. There is some pitting where the bearings run and I am not sure if it is too much and I should replace my axles. This job has been getting bigger!
