I'm swapping out an external electric fuel pump for a new one (same make/model). Do I need to prime the new pump somehow or will it self-prime when I hit the key?

Just turn it on and it will prime itself. You will be able to hear the pump noise change pitch (load up) when it starts pumping fuel.

Eric is right assuming the pump is installed correctly and gravity fed. If it is not gravity fed it may or may not prime itself.
