Eric,
Can you bring us up to date on your latest ET's, improvements, changes you've made to your car?

How is it hooking?

Well Garrett it went 10.90 @ 122 Wednesday. I spent a lot of time screwing around with my new Mighty Demon 800, but did make some passes with the old carb. Here is the detail on my passes.

Temp was 60*F and dropped to 53*F by the time I left. Steady headwind of 15 mph (getting pretty tired of this stinking headwind at the track -- track runs from east to west). Passes were typically 10-15 minutes apart, no more than 1/2 hour. Engine temp and oil temp pretty consistent. Launched by flashing the converter from 2200-2500 RPM (like I do when bracket racing) every pass except where noted. Fuel is 50-50 mix of 93 and 110 octane until the tuneup is nailed down, then 93 octane.

1st pass. Acted lean, double bog on launch after squirters. ran 11.77 at 114 mph. Popped a little out the carb (800 Demon).

2nd pass. Fattened jetting to 71F/81R (from stock 68/76). Still had the
double bog (800 Demon), no popping, trap speed increased to 118.9 MPH on an 11.35 pass.

3rd pass. Removed ram air to see if Ram Air is messing with the annular boosters, used 1-1/4" drop base cleaner base, 3" filter, and K&N extreme filter lid. Same bog, ran 11.31 at 119.3 mph. I suspect the main circuit is coming on too late -- may need smaller HS air bleeds.

4th pass. Switch from the new 800 Demon to my trusty old Speed Demon 750. Same air cleaner. No bog, ran 11.31 at 120.8 mph. spun tires hard (had to get out of it for a split second).

5th pass. dropped air pressure 1 psi. same carb and filter. No bog, ran
11.16 at 121.16 MPH. Spun tires, not as bad.

6th pass. dropped another 1 psi. same carb / filter as before. 11.06 at 121.6 MPH. Hooked OK (1.57 sixty), but track is slick and haven't seen the VHT all night.

7th pass. Reinstalled Ram Air. Launched off the converter (fully loaded) Ran new best -- 10.908 at 122.23 mph. Finally hooked hard, 1.481 sixty foot.

8th pass. Removed 1" tapered 4 hole spacer and reinstalled old 1" open Spacer. Spun, went 11.057 but ran 122.51 MPH with a miserable 1.61 sixty foot.

In spite of the bad luck with the new carb I managed to validate a couple things.

1) the 1" open spacer seems to be better than a 4 hole tapered spacer. I may try a 2" open spacer if I can get it to fit or maybe 1" four hole over a 1" open. This will help me determine if the motor wants more plenum volume. If it does I may try going to the Victor E intake.

2) the Ram air seems to add MPH with the old carb but hurts when used with the new carb. This seems to validate that the new 800 Mighty Demon is still lean. I plan to try using smaller air bleeds to see if I can get the main circuit in faster.

3) when the track gets slick the car launches better with the converter fully loaded and minimum tire pressure.

Also, my previous trip out I verified that the car went fastest with 35* total timing. I may play with the timing a little more yet, but I think I am pretty close at 35.

Sounds like it's coming along pretty good Eric. Sounds like it got a lot left in it that tuning will bring out.

Thanks for the update.

Once the track comes around hopefully you can hook your new power.

Keep beating on it.

Come on Eric. At 122 mph your going to have head wind no matter what! :D

Let that thing cool down more than 15 minutes between runs and you will see a few hundredths too!

Thanks for the pointers guys. I welcome anyone with suggestions . . .

I would like to see high 10.7s by fall. Mid 10.8's seem pretty reasonable at this point with some tuning, but more than a tenth may be hard to come by at this stage of the game.

I think weight reductions is probably my best bet, but that can get expensive and I do not want to give up anything that would hurt streetability.

Can you borrow a 950 or 1000 HP or maybe try a dominator Eric, that is a lot of cubes!!! good luck, AL

Yeah, I borrowed an 850 Demon and it ran 2/10ths slower than the 750 Demon. It launched clean and pulled good but it felt lazy on shift recovery. I can try an 850 Holley if need be . . . and I just might if I don't get the Demon squared away soon.

Eric, do you have an LM-1. I find it invaluable. Great results!!

Eric, what's the venturi size on the 800??

Eric68
May 1st, 06, 12:22 PM
John, If its the same as the 825 with downleg boosters (I believe it is) the venturi are 1.425" the butterflies are 1-3/4"

BTW. the general consensus so far is to try jet extensions on the new Demon. I ran them on the old carb, never thought about putting them on the new.

where did you weld the bung for the o2 sensor?

Just after the collector flange in the head pipe. I didn't want it in the collector since I was/am changing headers.

I trust you use a heated style O2 sensor then Rick . . . being back that far I would think a one wire non-heated sensor would have trouble getting up to temp.

Yes - it's the heated one (Bosch I think) that comes with the Innovate kit. Very helpful.
