: votage regulator mounting(rubber nuts?)
69Rfine Apr 30th, 06, 07:30 AM I have a Sept. 69 camaro. I have heard that the voltage regulator was attached to radiator support using rubber encased nuts. I also heard that they were just bolted to the radiator support. which way is correct from the factory? Thanks! Larry,69Rfine
3forme Apr 30th, 06, 07:50 AM 69Rfine,
I have an 11C and an 01D in the gararge and their both directly bolted but seems I remember what your talking about or am I thinking about wipermotors?
JimM Apr 30th, 06, 10:48 AM on the 68 for sure, the reg was attached to the rad support by 3 expanding rubber wellnuts. I've heard some say that 69 used 2 wellnuts and one bolt and nut. I have my doubts about that. You should be able to tell by the size of the holes, all 3 the same size = all 3 wellnuts.
fyi, you don't see too many bolts and nut arrangements originally from chevy, takes 2 tools to put it on, they didn't do that.
Gary L Apr 30th, 06, 12:33 PM Just sheet metal screws.
3forme Apr 30th, 06, 01:23 PM Gary L is right, my terminology was wrong but do you call those screws with a bolt head?

Hex head sheet metal screws.
JohnZ Apr 30th, 06, 04:46 PM Yup - hex-head self-tapping sheet metal screws on 69's - no well-nuts (although well-nuts were used for the left side radiator mounting).
3forme Apr 30th, 06, 07:05 PM Bingo!
JimM Apr 30th, 06, 07:16 PM So for the record, and for the what it is where it is sticky, can it be said that 67-68 used 3 wellnuts to mount the reg, and they required a separate ground wire because of this, and 69 bolted it on and used no ground wire?
John, are nuts welded into the rad support to mount the reg, or do they just screw into the sheetmetal?
3forme Apr 30th, 06, 07:38 PM Jim, screws straight into the support on 69's, but I had to go check my 67 after reading your post and sure 'nuff.........little rubber encased nuts so no metal on metal. Are those called wellnuts? I've had that car 15 years and never noticed that!

Yes.. They are 1/4"unc wellnuts and not 5/16"unc (which is what the radiator uses).
I'm not 100% on the ground wire detail, but I think in all cases (67-8-9), a seperate common ground wire from the reg (same ground the LH headlight harness uses) is screwed into the rad support, slightly to the vehicle's left of the voltage reg.. (1969 UPC6-B7 & UPC12-A4 & D1)
JimM May 1st, 06, 04:42 AM I have 2 69 pics, John z's and a second correcly restored 69 Z that do not have a ground wire. I'll check the third, click's, don't remember. The 67 and 68's I have do have the ground.
click May 1st, 06, 07:34 AM No ground on my 69 Regulator, just the sheetmetal screws. :)

Jim, no weld nuts - they're self-tapping sheet metal screws driven into extruded holes in the rad support; no ground wire used - the regulator grounds through the attachments.
m22mike May 4th, 06, 11:46 AM Have been involved with resto's on a 4/69 Copo,7/69 Copo, 2 L78 SS cars 5/69 and 9/69 and a 6/69 Z28. in all cases the original voltage reg was screwed directly to the Rad support, with no well nuts.
BlackoutSteve May 6th, 06, 05:44 PM Just to clear any confusion..
67-68s used 3x #10-24 well nuts for mounting the voltage reg. (Well nuts; AMK B-12936, screws AMK B-10011)
69s did not use "well" nuts or had "weld" nuts on the support for the mounting of the reg. Just 3x ~3/16 holes for 3x 1/4"-14 x 1/2" (GM#177999) to tap into. (AMK # B-12096 for grey phosphate or B-11094 for zinc plated.. I'm not sure which is correct.)

(Originally I said the voltage reg used 1/4" well nuts and the radiator 5/16" well nuts. This is wrong, the 67-68 voltage reg's is 10-24 and all radiator's are 1/4" ;) )
