I own a 68 non-stock color, and the firewall is semi-gloss black. Everyone I have talked to and everything I have read has said the same thing. Would look at some of the other Camaro websites before I went forward. Email if you want some 1st gen Camaro sites.

The firewall wall should not be the same color as the car, though many people do this and they look good. The color should be a flat black. The best and easiest I have found is #1613 krylon. Available at most hardware stores and even the novice can apply it.

The firewall surface itself is always black, but I have noticed different applications of the base color on the cowl. Some cars seem to have the base color painted on the entire horizontal surface of the cowl all the way up to where it meets the vertical firewall. Other cars I have seen carry the black paint across the top and just under where the vent grille meets the body. When I tore my car apart, it seems like the second method was used originally on my car. My Camaro is a 67 built in Van Nuys so maybe the Norwood cars were painted different or done differently in other years.

Eggshell black, or what they also call a 30%gloss black. I went to a paint store and they sold me all I needed to mix it myself and spray it with my own sears spray gun. Turned out excellent. I did my whole underside and the fender wells front and rear, radiator support and a few other parts. I painted my subframe gloss black to contrast a little better with the firewall and the gloss black engine with all kind of aluminum parts. Check it out on my page.

My 69 model VN car has a black firewall only. The cowl area is body color all the way up to the lip of the cowl.

I understand that to do a "correct" resto, you paint the firewll first and then shoot the cowl while standing over the dash from inside the car (this is how they did it at the factory). This will get a fine mist of body color overspray on the black firewall. They did not tape off or cover the firewall when they painted the cowl.

If you are building a nice street rod, it is all moot. I wouldn't do the overspray thing.
