: Raedy to mount Bilstein shocks on rear. question on mounting!
ray moore May 4th, 06, 04:23 PM I have new Bilstein shocks for the rear of a 68. I went to put them on and see they already have a bolt/bushings/washer setup already installed on the bottom mount. I purchased new shock mounting hardware from Ricks's that is the normal hardware for a 68. My question is do I try and remove the Bilstein mount and try to install onto stock mount ( don't even know if the center diameter is the same). or use the Bilstein. The only issue is the Bilstein does not have very much thread sticking out the back side of the mount. Maybe tightning up and compressing the bushings I will get enough.
Also I have the leafs and axle hanging down ( frame on jack stands ).
I do not seem to have enough shock length. do I have to have the weight on the rear axle to compress up enough to install the shocks.
Thanks
Ray
JimM May 4th, 06, 04:26 PM Ray,
I remember this coming up before, tho I don't recall the resolution, most likely just used the Bilstien hardware rather than the stock stuff.
A search would probably reveal the facts that escape me.
ray moore May 4th, 06, 04:39 PM Thanks Jim.
I did a search but did not see that come up. I will keep looking. It seems like the lower mounting hardware lines up OK, the only concern is the amount of thread I can get on the nut side of the mount. Maybe it will be fine. I just stopped the install until I find out if anyone else had this issue and what they did.

JimM May 4th, 06, 04:47 PM From what I found, you should have #AK2074 shock, and they will mount with the included bolt & spacer

I will use the Bilstein mounts. I threaded it on and after a little tightning I think the threads will be fine.
How about the shock length? Does the rear have to have weight on it or does the shock extend out far enough to bolt up with the rear hanging down? I tried to pull the open more, would not budge but I did not force it.
Thanks
Ray
RickD May 5th, 06, 04:34 AM Once I tightened mine using the Bilstein hardware, there was just enough threads. It does look close, though!
JimM May 5th, 06, 04:38 AM You will most likely have to raise the axle some to get the shocks on, a jack under the pumpkin will do the job.
19topless69 May 5th, 06, 05:30 AM I had the same problem, after about 50 miles the nut and lock washer fell off one of the shocks. Replaced both with lock nuts ( the nut with the plastic
in the threads) Has been fine for 3yrs. Great shock choice!
CarlC May 5th, 06, 10:04 AM Ditto on the above, use the Bilstein hardware.
Mine also requires jacking up the differential to get the shock to fit. No problems here after 5 years.
ray moore May 5th, 06, 03:58 PM Thanks everyone.
Sounds like I'm good to go then!
It's Friday. Can't wait till tomorrow to put the shocks on. Would do it tonight .but I'm finishing up gas tank install.
Thanks
Ray
JimM May 5th, 06, 07:01 PM Ray, if it's not too late, I could use a pic of the top of the tank, with sender wire and ground wire attached!
ray moore May 6th, 06, 04:43 AM Sorry Jim.
I did not read this until this morning. I installed the tank last night.
