View Full Version : Staring me right in the face!!!
HwyStarJoe Sep 10th, 02, 06:31 PM Wow... I'm sure others have made this discovery before but this one sent me back on my heels tonight!
I'm out in the garage just standing there looking at the shell of my car and suddenly I'm seeing numbers and letters on the firewall above the heater hole! I haven't finished stripping the firewall yet and now I'm glad I didn't!
Take a look at the very bottom picture on my HobbyStage page. I can clearly see the number 6, a big letter D, then at least one or two more marks made at the factory on the firewall. I can't wait to clean the rest of the paint off and see what it says!!

I still haven't found an abbreviated X code on the rear bulkhead yet. Oh well...
P.S. Sorry there's so many darn pictures on my HobbyStage page. I'm transferring them all to a different service soon.

Unreal Sep 11th, 02, 05:52 AM Joe, What is the original color? I think they scribbled the color, or shorthand version on the cowl.
Unreal Sep 11th, 02, 06:23 AM Joe, Could the 6 be a G? Do I see evidence of GOLD? Was your car originally Olimpic Gold?
HwyStarJoe Sep 11th, 02, 06:39 AM The original color was 57 (Fathom Green). But someone in the past had sanded most of it off the firewall and either primered it grey or black, then painted it that SICK color of bright green and then black primered it again. The first charactor is definitely a 6.
I'm trying to figure out how to get the rest of the paint/primer off without destroying those marks.
Kyvox Sep 11th, 02, 08:11 AM Could it be GR for gray primer?
I did a car that had "R OX" written on the bare metal, covered by red oxide primer.
HwyStarJoe Sep 11th, 02, 09:11 AM Nope... take a look at the picture. A 6, then a space and a bigger letter D. Until I get the rest of the paint off, I'm thinking they were messing around and wrote something like '6 D 9 er' or something like that. I'll find out tonight.

cpodeep Sep 11th, 02, 02:05 PM Joe,
I have just sent you pictures of my firewall, it has the exact same thing! Mine is a 68... so much for the 69 theory. You can go ahead and sand it as whatever was used to make the marks etched the metal. it is there forever.
Let me know what you think of the pictures

HwyStarJoe Sep 11th, 02, 03:54 PM Got your pics Scott, looks like it says GOD or GOO or something. I'll post them in the same place as I did the one of mine.
I sanded the rest of the area around where I found them on my firewall and a few more charactors showed up....
206 or 296, then D-GR. I'm not sure about the 2x6 because the middle charactor was right on a spot weld. They are etched and rusty but the 3 letters sanded away and are gone. They weren't rusty. There's some weird mark right after the D-GR but it doesn't make sense. I take the letters to mean Dark GReen, since my car was Fathom Green.
stingr69 Sep 12th, 02, 02:28 PM If it helps any, I have "LGRN" (Assumed to mean light green) on my firewall in white grease crayon and it was originaly a Rally Green car.

KWIK 69 Sep 12th, 02, 05:29 PM Just out of curiosity... has anyone ever asked GM or any workers from that era what all these codes mean?
(I'm still searching for answers on the Van Nuys "M" codes... I believe them to be of similar nature to the NOR "x" codes.)
Man, Joe... makes me want to go out and start sawing on my firewall. LOL!

Spooky Sep 12th, 02, 07:15 PM Mine has DBL on it. I took it as Dusk Blue which the car came originaly, code 51
cpodeep Sep 12th, 02, 11:13 PM Well, if GOD is on my firewall Lemans Blue must be GODs "Heavenly" color!
Hey, maybe I have one of those special order, one of a kind cars, that was built for the man up above. Do you think I should stop working on the car and open the garage door on Sunday mornings and let people stare at my firewall in deep reverance? I gotta go to work, talk to you guys later.
It was not my intent to upset anyone with my statements, it was just an attempt at humor.
