I painted my dash top over the winter and finally am getting ready to re-assemble everything. When i pulled my dash cluster out of storage however, I got the idea that maybe now is a good time to touch it up (as it has a few scratches and the paint has faded). So what color (what style of black) should I use and what kind of prep/paint is needed for this to look good? I did a search and came up with mixed results. Also, when sanding it lightly what grit of paper will be best? And should I use a plastic primer?

Ha thats prolly enough ?'s for now
Thanks in advance,
David

Dave, I just use Krylon black semi-gloss on my Gauge cluster. First I primed it with Krylon primer gray and then put the black on top. The trick is to mask off the gauge tunnels and the silver rings, since you don't want paint on either one. Use small strips of masking tape on the rings and then larger ones crosswise to cover the tunnel so paint can't get through.

Krylon semi-gloss black paint works great. If your silver is coming off you can paint the whole cluster with semi- gloss black. Then go to a craft store and get a silver paint pen. It has a small felt tip and you can paint the thin lines. I have not seen any chrome pens but the silver is real close. You can also use a red scotch brite pad to scuff it if you want. Hope this helps

1st thing before sanding is remove any polish. A tac rag . If u sand without removing oils then u will sand them into the surface making very difficult to remove.
Sanding I use a soft/fine scotch brite pad
Krylon...we dont have that here so dont know what sort of paint it is.
I use Acrlyc lacquer. and air brush. any over over spray on the silver high lights canbe be removed as soon as finished painting with a little solvent on a rag.Only just damp with solvent.
To paint the siver high lights I use an enamel, modelers paint and a cotton bud, similar as described above.
