I have a 1992 RS 305TBI its been sitting covered for all winter. I am about to put the car on the road for summer. my question is what should i have done to the car proir to a long ride on the highway. Excluding the obvious oil change coolant flush and fill and filters. Are there things you dont always have done that should not be overlooked i.e. rear diff fluid, pulling the rear drums to check the shoes and spring kits?

You might siphon out the fuel in the tank and replace with fresh fuel. Donate the fuel to the neighbor or charity of your choice.

Seems you have it covered, check or change belt(s) and keep the old ones for emergency fix along side of the road. Same with radiator hoses, except throw the old ones away.

You may want to fast charge the battery, a 30 amp recharge for 20 minutes is good, to break down sulphation. The idea is to make the battery case warm to the touch, not hot. Then continue with a lower charge rate. You don't want it to boil out the acid, just make it warm for activity in the cell to break down the sulphation between the plates, just my opinion.

We have owned a 1989 Camaro convert, 305 TBI, for 13 years. It sits in storage from September until May hooked to a battery tender.

It has had a coolant system flush or two, new hoses and belts a few years ago. When May rolls around we change oil, lower the top and drive. Never had a problem.

One suggestion-our '89 requires 91 octane fuel which was probably regular back then. With the overdrive trans it is easy to lug the engine and the last thing you want is detonation with the weak 305 cast pistons. Use 92 octane or better fuel.
