View Full Version : Engine flexing...throttle linkage sticking..NEED HELP
STM69 May 8th, 06, 08:13 AM I checked this out for about a 1/2 hour. When I put a heavier load on the engine the engine will flex to the passengers side of the car and because of that the throttle linkage gets stuck on something and causes the gas pedal to stick...Not good. Has anyone experienced this?
3forme May 8th, 06, 08:23 AM I think most of us have, you have a motor mount issue. Repair asap, it is quite dangerous as you've found out I'm sure.
deerhunter May 8th, 06, 09:30 AM 3forme is right. I second the motion to replace the motor mounts with a good brand, not the Chinese rubber crap.
Daral May 8th, 06, 01:28 PM There was a recall on 1st generation cars for this. The dealer added a cable to the drivers side engine mount that held the engine from flexing too much and interferring with the throttle linkage. You may want to consider adding this after you replace your motor mounts.
Larger Dave May 8th, 06, 02:13 PM They also redesigned the engine mounts to the clamshell and four bolt pedestal used in newer cars coupled with a throttle cable instead of a rod. These new parts can be added to the small block Camaro with the boring of some holes in the sub frame; though they wouldn't look stock.
If you go with polyurethane mounts they have an interlocking safety mechanism similar to the new clam-shell style and they bolt right up without any modification. Once again this is an anathema for the numbers matching crowd, and it does transmit more of the engines vibration into the passenger compartment (which Harley riders consider a plus, though the Gold Wing crowd like the rubber mounts better).

STM69 May 8th, 06, 02:29 PM I don't know what I want to go with. Solid steel mounts? Poly Mounts? I definately don't care about a stock look i just don't want this thing to flex anymore. But i don't want a headache from extreme vibrations. Any suggestions or links to some cheap but good mounts? i was looking at these:

What do you think?
BPOS May 8th, 06, 04:11 PM I just use the parts house replacement type interlocking mounts. The original mounts had no fail-safe feature - when the rubber to metal bond gave way, there was nothing to hold it back. The newer version has metal tabs that limit movement should the rubber fail, and they are inexpensive.
STM69 May 9th, 06, 09:04 AM Yea but I'm afraid rubber is going to flex too much. My engine is flexing big time. 4 inches..maybe?
RickD May 9th, 06, 09:27 AM I think a new mount will cure. Sounds like you have a broken mount. I have the poly and, yes, they do transmit a bit of vibration but not objectionable to me.
PLT-1 May 9th, 06, 09:44 AM Man O man.. I'll never forget the time I was at a stop light on my way home from high school in my ol' mans charger...lol.. He was TDY in the Air Force and I did NOT have permission to take his car... I Decided to do a power braker at the stop light and guess what... Broken motor mount..YIKES!!! Stuck wide open... Fotunately by that time I was an experienced ace w/the "stuck wide open" problem...lol.. I reached up and turned the key off.. "Thunk!".. the engine fell back down... I'm sure I was very pale, I was sweating and felt kinda' sick...( There was a car in front of me)... I got lucky for acting (acting???.. being) like a dumb a$$.. Couldn't resist telling the story...
CFunK May 9th, 06, 09:57 AM In my personal experience the poly mounts that I installed did not add any vibration.
STM69 May 9th, 06, 11:13 AM Any guess on how much stiffer the polys are than stock replacement? 2X? 3X? I'm not real concerned with vibration... I just definately want it to not flex as much as possible. Will the poly be enough?
Greg O May 9th, 06, 09:04 PM I run one solid mount on the drivers side. I did this lmost 20 years ago so I can't say how the vibration compares to before, but I don't even notice it.
blainedoe May 9th, 06, 09:20 PM I'm experiencing the same problem but maybe not as extreme but i would say you have a broken motor mount as well. I checked mine and i can see where its broken sometimes you can't see it from the weight of the motor pushing it back down.
JohnZ May 10th, 06, 06:01 PM The motormount you have now is BROKEN. Just replace it with an interlocking mount and it'll be fine, and the rubber one won't "flex" - the interlock prevents that.
