View Full Version : It just keeps getting better...
scottl2 May 10th, 06, 05:42 PM For those of you who read and responded to my delima about column-console conversion you'll be disappointed to find out that it just has gone from bad to worse. At this point, all I can do is keep my sense of humor. I think it could very well keep me out of jail. They finally got my new console guages installed, but the previous owner must have cut out some wires because nothing was available to plug the harness in to. So, they decided to run new wires. After wiring it up, they powered it on and melted my brand new cluster! Wait. It gets better. Then they have the nerve to call me and tell me it's my responsibility because I didn't supply them with the harness. If I want it fixed, I can call the supplier of my guages and tell them it was defective. Then I can pay them more money to take it out and put the replacement in. All I can do is laugh.
importkiller69ss May 10th, 06, 05:51 PM omg dude that it horrible..i have no idea what to tell you to do since i am a little to young for this there has to be something you can do...i know my pride would get them best of me and my temper would come out and there would be some problems if they did that to my car

Which great restoration shop did this?
Rack Man May 10th, 06, 10:28 PM This kinda thing is exactly why I have forced myself to learn to do some of these types of things by myself....Especially w/ TC you have way more knowledge available to you than most resto shops...and the big difference is that you actually CARE about the project you are working.....Many shops just throw the **** together...and say "Good Enuf"
These idiots should have refused to do the job if they needed the harness that bad....It's actually pretty simple wiring...They got something jacked up good.
It may be time to cut your losses with these clowns and pick up the car!
Good Luck!
Dan
400bird May 11th, 06, 12:09 AM if the shop melted the gauges they should replace them and wire it right this time, because like it has already been said its easy wiring they would have had to really screw it up to melt the whole thing
johnny67 May 11th, 06, 01:58 AM take them to small claims court and get all your money back. Also you can add any money for filing the charges and whatever else.
clwilcox33 May 11th, 06, 06:57 AM There is no way they are not responsible for replacing the gauges if they ran the new wires and they hooked it up incorrectly!!
secondtime z May 11th, 06, 07:35 AM There is no way they are not responsible for replacing the gauges if they ran the new wires and they hooked it up incorrectly!!
Agreed, file a small claims suit and get your car Outta there!
502prostreet May 11th, 06, 09:54 AM Yes,they are responsible for the damages. I was talking with my mechanic that works on my 69. He was telling me when he does work on a car and something goes wrong ie, fire, melted wires or something else. He is responsible.
Your resto shop should have asked for a new harness first before they done anything, or atleast called and asked you first.
Small Claims:thumbsup:
SixtyAte May 11th, 06, 07:49 PM Scott,
I can not imagine what this is up to now but think its time to cut your losses and get an attorney or consumer service involved. This is what happens when you do not get everything to be done written down and then the agreed price. If more work is needed, that would be another agrement. At the $50.00 per hour that you agreed to for the work to be done, i'll bet you are almost at the $4000.00 mark and that is just crazy. This shop is way out of line and you need to stop the bleeding now! Boy..this gives the many great resto-repair shops a black eye.

importkiller69ss May 11th, 06, 07:58 PM please keep us up to date on what happens...since i work in a shop like this it gives everyone a bad rep.....i am so sorry
wagonman May 11th, 06, 11:04 PM call and tell them you will report them to the BAR Bureau of Automotive Repair.
jcdubs May 12th, 06, 06:35 AM I agree, they are 100% responsible. If they take on the job it is there responsibility. Take them to court.
scottl2 May 12th, 06, 07:26 AM First let me say "thank you" to all of you for your support. Believe it or not, I take comfort knowing i'm not a crazy person. All of you have helped me realize that.
The restoration shop is RMR Restorations in Hollis, NH. They're advertised in Hemmings and very close to where I live. The owner even came out to my house to see the car and discuss the project before I made any moves. I had called several shops and I know a thing or two about putting stuff together so I had a pretty good idea of what it would take to complete the job. I visited the shop prior and really felt like they had a great setup. They specialize in hot rods and I can say - the cars that were up there looked amazing and were down from the ground up by them. I really think the krux of this issue is that they simply did not have any manuals for my car to follow along with and didn't use any resources available to do it right. Quite frankly, that's not my problem. The reason I went to a professional is because I simply don't have enough time to get it done on my own. My biggest mistake was not getting anything in writing and formal. Live and learn. I have now started to put everything in writing and have stated that I will pay what I agreed to pay only if they complete the list of items they said they would. If not, let's make a reasonable offer for what has been done and give me my car back (not even drive-able at this point btw). It's easy to say take them to court, but difficult to prove your right. Particularly when there's no documentation to back it up. It's my word against his. Unfortunately, I think my best option is to deal directly with the shop and be as fair as I can. I'm desparately trying not to lose my temper. I know there are excellent and quality restoration shops out there, I just picked the wrong one. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Good point Scott...
Do not loose your cool and be the one who is the villian. Soft talk and kind words may be a starting point but you may have no alternitive other that court sorry to say. As far as manuals, they are available at every Camaro resto parts dealer. I hope this turns out well for you..

Sorry to hear you're going through all this. Hollis is not far from me or the Amherst show (as I'm sure you know) and I've never heard of them. Good luck. You're right to hold your tongue for now. I hope it all works out for you in the end.
