: Got the assembly blues.....

Assembling a basket case is a MAJOR PITA!
Now that the car is starting to go back together, I'm hunting hardware.

Is the upper bolt for the power steering pump cradle that passes through the water pump boss a 3" all thread type?

The boss is threaded clean through. It looks like a 3" bolt with the same thread as the cradle nut is what I need to attach the cradle. I searched high and low..... can't find one in my shop anywhere. AARRGGHH!

That's not all..... when I went to pre-assemble the power steering pump and all the brackets, I noticed the supply tube at the back of the pump was bent and pushed into the body, creating a huge gaping crack in the pump!
Back to the store to order a replacement.

Big block or small block?
No they're not all-thread.
SBCs use GM#9418847 or AMK#B-11225 ($3 buys 2). It's a 3/8"-16 unc x 3" of under-head-length, with a 9/16 hex. It has 1"-1 1/4" of thread. (www.amkproducts.com)

BBCs use GM#433102 which is not listed by AMK. According to my '69 BBC using repro RPO-N40 brackets, it's exactly the same bolt as far as dimensions go..

The return tubes are often incorrect as they vary for just about every different car they were fitted to.
I dare say you don't have THE pump that was originally on the car from new. You may be able to remove the pump housing, heat the return tube with an oxy to melt the brazing and then, clock the tube to where it won't interfere and braze it again.. It's what I had to do to mine. :)

1" to 1 1/4" of thread? I've got plenty of them.
I guess I'll just drill the threads out of the water pump boss then. I can't see the reason they'd be there anyway, except the fact that the water pump probably fits quite a number of other makes\models.

And no.... the power steering pump\reservoir is an over-the-counter deal. I expected there to be a few glitches when ordering replacement parts like that, so it's not that big of a deal. But the damaged tube (done in handling no doubt) and the crushed reservoir sides isn't a glitch I counted on. I even checked it out when I picked it up, and again later on. I just never noticed the tube. The wall of the pump was actually torn at the base of the tube, so I wasn't gonna mess around trying to fix it.

Thanks Steve!

Here's the bolt listed in the AMK catalog.. Nothing special unless you want the "TR" markings..

I have a later 70's BBC long pump that used the same boss for the PS pump adjusting bolt instead of the through bolt that we're discussing. The boss was drilled blind with a large 7/16" or 1/2"unc thread. It confused me and sounds like a similar issue what you are experiencing now.

(I got an alum Victor instead.)

Thanks again Steve. I've got tons of 3/8"-16 x 3" 9/16 hex head bolts. I don't care about the TR marks.
I just thought I was going to go crazy looking for an all-threaded bolt! I've got hundreds of pieces of hardware, and not one that would fit. ;)
