View Full Version : Tire rub after caster change
rlovell383 May 16th, 06, 06:42 PM Hey guys.
Just installed tubular arms from SC&C(which fit well and look great). Also installed the Howe tall ball joints. Got it on the ground and re-aligned it. I went with 1 deg. negative camber, 1/8 inch of toe to start, and 4 degs of caster on the left, 4.5 on the right. I know these cars are all a little different but how many of you have clearance issues behind the tire on the wheelwell. I'm talking way in back on the bottom of the inner fender, and only when turning. I would like to dial in like 5-6 degrees of caster but that cant happen. The only solution for me now is to install a shorter tire. I currently have 245-60-15s on the front. Eventually Ill get some 17s with 245-45s. They are shorter and should help. Test drove tonight and WOW what a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for any input.

Everett#2390 May 17th, 06, 04:42 AM You could do two things:
1. Install a smaller width tire
2. Install a wheel with less backspacing.
rlovell383 May 17th, 06, 08:34 PM With my particular situation I dont think that would solve it. The tire rubs on the rear most portion of the inner fender, and out towards the body, not the frame.
In any case, I took out 1/2 degree caster on the side that rubbed, and that did the trick. Im thinking to get more caster, Ill need a shorter tire. Maybe 235s. Although I hate to give up tire width up front. At this point perhaps the gains in cornering I would get from more caster would neutralize when I put on a narrower tire. So Ill just leave it alone until I have a bunch of extra money for 17s.

BonzoHansen May 17th, 06, 08:42 PM Did you do the upper & lower ball joints, or just lower? Also, why the different caster setups? What are you compensating for?
A 245/60/15 is not a super tall hoop, ~26.6. I guess you could drop another .5 before it looks 'under tired'. A 255/45R17 would go ~26.1. A 245/45R17 is pretty short, IMO.
JimM May 17th, 06, 09:18 PM I have stock arms with the g/s mod. With 1 neg camber 4 caster, my 23.5" tall 225/45/16's don't come close to anything
rlovell383 May 18th, 06, 10:27 AM I have the street comp 1 kit. It includes the tall upper BJs and the upper arms. I plan on doing the G mod as well eventually. Mark at SC&C said it works great in conjunction with the tall BJs. I just want to make one change at a time and evaluate the improvements. 1/2 degree more caster on the right side helps the car track on crowned roads.

GregD May 18th, 06, 02:27 PM I've got the same issue with 275/45/17's. I have global west UCA's and hotchkis springs. Has the alignment shop dial in about 5 degrees of caster. Left front tire rubbed the fender bolt and rear of wheel well. I ended up dialing out some of the caster and grinding the majority of the head of the fender bolt down. So far so good.

zdld17 May 19th, 06, 05:41 PM All 245 x 15 on stock ralleys I have ever used and some on 16" custom wheels with stock back space ,,, have always rubbed on me on the rear inner and headlamp bucket shields... Went back to 235's
rlovell383 May 19th, 06, 07:18 PM Yes 245 60 15 on the front with stock 15x7 rallye wheels. Ive got 275 60 15s on the rear. They are a very tight fit, but Ive got everything to clear with no rubbing anywhere.

Jim, you need bigger tires. That is too short. You need at lest 2" more of diameter.
