View Full Version : Outta Options

Unfortunately, I'm out of options and I need a little help. After being lied to by several of the more prominent first generation Camaro suppliers I need some help locating a RH (passenger side) outer/lower cowl for a '67 Camaro (perferrably a new replacement panel). Everyone with an early model Camaro is probably looking for these but I'm looking for the complete "tulip panel" as it is sometimes referred to (see attached photo - sorry for the tiny pic). I asked the last company I contacted if they had it in stock "before" I placed my order only to find out that they were on backorder after receiving a partial shipment. I was stupid and actually believed them when they said they had it and cut the old panel out right after I ordered it (and was not too careful with the removal...cut, cut, torch, torch). I mean the guy had assured me that they had it and that he had tagged it for my order (as you can tell I was a little paranoid by this time). Live and learn. I know we can't bash the suppliers here so let's just say that I "ground up" their catalog for packaging.
Sooooo.... anyone have any leads on where to find one of these jewels? I've been looking for a few months (since around February) and it's really starting to hold me up. Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the replies:

I went to Belairbobs.com and didn't see them listed online. I'll give them a call in the morning to see if they have them.
I also buy a lot from Rick's (with pretty good service) but they were on backorder for a month or two with them. When I emailed them and asked them when to expect them they basicly told me that they didn't know. Hard to plan anything with a target date a vague as that. (I cancelled the order once I "thought" I had found another one).
I went to Restoration World's website and they have the outer cowls but the pricing leads me to believe that it is the outer skin portion only. They don't have a pic on the site so I'll call them also.
I think the problem is that the manufacturer (Dynacorn, I believe) has been awaiting a shipment for awhile. The container ship from China must have made a wrong turn. The last date I heard by the stores would get a shipment is July. This won't do so I resorted to posting this. Has anyone else ran into the same problem with this part? Jimmy's Bowtie & Supply wished me luck 'cause they knew that everyone is looking for these. I guess I was hoping that someone had one "laying around" (I know...fat chance but like I said "I'm Outta Options).
I was looking at the one I cut out (actually partially cut out) and I can probably try once again to make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t using the old one but that is not my first choice.

If these are coming from China and the ship has left port, then normal ocean time from port to port is only 12 days. (I do this for a living) In my experience, the hold up is customs and the discharge port on our side.

I'll keep my eyes and ears open here. Sorry about the problem. I feel bad that your work has come to a halt. Keep your chin up. You'll find one...

More than likely it will be on back order with who ever you call. You could luck out and find one on a shelf that someone ordered and didn't take, but I would not count on it. If you are pressed for time you might have to look for other options.

The parts suppliers basically all buy at the same few "stampers" and if it's on back order at one it's probably on back order at all.

I know you know this NOW, I don't mean to rub salt in the wound, sorry.

Don't EVER, EVER cut out a panel before you have the new one laying there in front of you. I don't care if your mother has promised on a bible that it is in the mail. "Getting the part" is only part of the problem, WHAT that part looks like and how it fits to the car is an equally big issue.

Even OEM parts, NEVER, EVER cut out the panel first. Now, this is an old rule from autobody boot camp, but for some reason I have guys at work who STILL will make this mistake after years in the business. I will see it every once in a while, they cut the part off only to find that the new part doesn't include some bracket or extension or something that they "thought" it would. Just a few days ago a guy cut a rad support out with an air chisel only to find when the new one got there that there were a few brackets welded to the support that were not on the new one. He had to go out into the metal bin and retrieve the part, then drill out the welds on these brackets, repair them (he cut them out with an air chisel remember) and weld them onto the frame rails before he could fit the rad support. NEVER, EVER, cut out panels prior to receiving the replacement.

I just got off the phone with Restoration World here in Ohio-they are good to deal with, no B.S. from my experience.

Anyway, they just sold their last pair last week and confirmed they are on national backorder as far as he has been made aware. They place their orders first thing every Tues. and he said he will try to order more then. You will likely get the answer from them that they receive from the suppplier as to an ETA.

Hopefully something will turn up soon!

Thanks for all of the input. I figured that the part was on national backorder....I was hoping someone had one squirreled away that they ended up not needing (a bit of a stretch) or knew of a lesser known parts dealer that "could" have one in stock. The last ETA I heard was July... in February, when this all started, that was unacceptable... now it may not be too bad. But I also know what the "e" in ETA stands for and July could mean July or it could mean a few months after. (To be fair I have to remind myself that my ETA on completion of this build was Fall/Winter of '06.... which isn't going to happen). If it were easy then everyone would have a restored Camaro.
I guess I'll start trying to focus on the back half of the car and work around the problem as much as possible. It's not like I don't have other stuff to do but I hate getting into a section and stopping in the middle. I like to complete what I start if possible (mainly because I forget where it left off). If I get an update I'll post it so that the others looking for this part can grab one.

did you try steve's camaros. he is in san bruno ca. i know for a fact that he has a stock pile of parts. he is a small dealer compared to the big guys like classic so he might have some hidden away.

No such luck with Steve's Camaro but it's good to find another source if I have some trouble with another part. Thanks.

Just a FYI - these pieces have been on national backorder since February. The best/only explanation that I got while I was looking was that Dynacorn was keeping all that they had for their bodies and were not releasing any for distribution (including their own). I was lucky enough to find a pair through a member here. All I can suggest it too keep trying - some smaller distributors may have stock.
