: What to use.
sixtsevnssrs Apr 13th, 00, 07:57 PM Here's is the problem. I am so close to the end of my resto, its the little things that are killing me.
The trim piece that holds the upper window seal above the door. Yes the weather strip tucks into this trim piece that runs up the A pillar all the way to the rear quarter window. This trim piece just screws in to the pillar, right below the roof rail. What type of sealant is used between the car and this trim piece?
Also, what is used to hold the door glass in the regulator channel?
I was thinking a body sealer or seam sealer for both. Please help soon. I am going to work on the car Friday and want to pick up the stuff before I head out of town. Its a long trip out to the car.
Thanks

jbradway Apr 16th, 00, 04:42 PM Hi Tim. I looked at my trim piece and it looks like some sort of adhesive type tape was used. It is original because I found the factory paint underneath. I also remember scraping some sealer out in the pillar/roof joint. I can take some digital pics of the adhesive left on the trim and mail you some pics if it helps.

sixtsevnssrs Apr 17th, 00, 03:29 AM Jeff, If you get some pictures it sure would help. I think that there was some type of cloth tape on the top of the A pillar. Its been a while. I have been looking in my GM assembly manual but have had no luck as of yet.

Jeff H Apr 17th, 00, 04:21 AM It looks like some sort of stick on foam sealer like you can put in your door jambs on your house. I just pulled the chrome pieces off last week and I haven't cleaned them up yet so if you want I can take a good hard look at them and the body to see what type of sealer was used.
jbradway Apr 17th, 00, 04:30 AM I mailed you some links to the pics I took. I agree with Jeff H. It does look like some sort of dense foam tape. The cloth part seems stuck to the joint where the pillar trim meets the roof rail trim. Here are the pics: http://67camaro.virtualave.net/P1010041.JPG http://67camaro.virtualave.net/P1010042.JPG

sixtsevnssrs Apr 17th, 00, 04:59 AM Ya, thats the stuff. I cleaned them up with some 3M Adhesive remover about a year ago and could not remember what was on there. Now I have to find some of that stuff. If I find a source I will let you guys know. Looks like you will be looking for some soon as well.

sixtsevnssrs Apr 17th, 00, 07:08 PM OK, I have a good idea now. I am going to look at Ace Hardware tomorrow. I remember seeing some of that foam rubber with the adhesive in roles. Very close to the same stuff I used on my heater box, but I used some thicker stuff. Turned out awsome! I am going to stick it on the crome piece then pop rivet it back into place. I was going to use the original screws but some of the holes had a little rust and when we took the body down to metal the hole may not be the same size. Aluminum pop rivets with wide head, won't come loose. If the weather holds out I might drive it home on Friday!!! I just got my carpet from ACC today. The sound deadener should be in this week. Tax check should be in soon to get new seat covers. Spring is looking good.

CarlC Apr 17th, 00, 08:55 PM sixts,
I had the same thoughts about a foam tape when re-installing mine. The problem I found was that I believe GM used some type of sealant/petroleum based product to waterproof the foam tape. This is hard to find and if you use an open-cell foam water can get through it. Closed cell foams were so stiff that it made the stainless channel distort so that the weatherstripping did a zig-zag across the top of the window. I finally ended up using butyl rubber, moulded by hand, and pressed the channel into place by hand until it was flush with the body. It does not take much and the relief on the back of the channel gives the butyl somewhere to expand.
Good luck. Post some pictures so we can check out the new ride!!

sixtsevnssrs Apr 18th, 00, 02:42 AM How about some pickup truck camper shell sealer. The stuff looks to be about the right thickness to fit in the channel on the trimming. if its to wide I can always cut it a little, should work. will let you know.
btw, Its just Six, like "check your six".

Jeff H Apr 18th, 00, 03:26 AM Good ideas, let us know what works best. I won't be getting to that stage for at least a year!
1st & 2nd GENGuy Apr 18th, 00, 02:30 PM The second time I did my 68 I used a black rubber double sticky tape. Recently I did my 78 and could not find the black rubber so I went with the foam double sticky tape. The foam worked okay but I agree with the post about the water issue. I will try harder to find the rubber style tape for the 68 (this will be the sixth time I painted the 68).

sixtsevnssrs Apr 18th, 00, 07:41 PM Picked up 20 feet of 1 inch by 1/8" at ace for 6.99,closed cell foam rubber sealant for pickup camper shells, self adhesive on one side. 1"x1/8" should do the trick. Will let you know. I drive the car home Friday!

Jeff H Apr 24th, 00, 02:47 AM Did you wash the car yet to seeif water soaks into it? I imagine that when you put the screws in and tighten them down it will compress it so that water couldn't get through.
molaker Apr 24th, 00, 04:45 PM sixtsevnssrs, I've been watching your post on this because I'am bringing my car home from the bodyshop friday and I'll have to do mine thanks for the tip! now if I can figure out how to post a picture.
sixtsevnssrs Apr 24th, 00, 06:36 PM Closed cell foam shouldn't leak. As soon as I can get some time and get the windows in and aligned I can let you know if it leaks. But it most likely will not. They use the stuff on camper shells, so it shouldn't.
