: P/S fluid change

My power steering has been running dexron tranny fluid. I was thinking that it would be a good idea to change to GM's fluid since I am installing a new steering box today.

Is there a problem with just draining & filling the system, or will I have to flush it out completely with GM fluid to avoid contamination with the dexron that is in there now?

Thanx in advance

If it was me I would take no chances. Unplug the return line and put it into a bucket and idle the engine. A steering box holds a surprising amount of fluid. Tranny fluid really isnt designed for steering boxes/pumps.

There uis no problem just adding the dextronII to the GM stuff...Ihave used what ever is handy on the self for 26 yrs, and thats what has happened, before then from new
Pump s/box is still orginal.

Thanx for the reply guys,

Since the box is new I don't have to worry about flushing it out, so maybe I'll just crank the engine over with both hoses off & run some fluid through the pump that way to clean it out a bit.

I used to always run tranny fluid in my power steering on my previous cars, but I have read some posts here stating that transmission fluid has changed over the years without taking power steering systems into consideration.

You might as well start fresh with the correct power steering fluid, since you have a new gearbox.

The GM fluid is a great product. Do a search here, there is a lot of good information on fluid types.

I have searched, & that is why I've decided to use GM's fluid. I used a generic fluid to flush out the lines & box already.

My latest problem is that I just went out to hook up the lines to the Fenco rebuilt steering box, & found that the return hose connector does not fit:mad:

The high pressure line fits just fine, but I can't get the fitting for the low pressure hose to even start into the box. It seems as though the treads on the box are buggered up. I did recheck them onto the box I took out & they fit fine.

Any suggestions other than removing the baox & exchanging for another one?

Murphy's law is really taking over on this project.
