View Full Version : Ghost Stripe what is it?
jhilts May 20th, 06, 03:55 PM I am close to paint. Finally!! I was going Silver with a Black Bumblee Stripe. However, I saw a camaro today with Ghost stripes. I liked it a lot.
I want to Ghost Stripe the Bumblee Stripe.
Is the Ghost Stripe a Pearl? A slightly different shade of silver? Is it applied to the base coat the clear coat?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Johnny Boy May 20th, 06, 05:33 PM I am definately no paint pro but I thing ghost stripes are the same color as the car but alittle lighter or darker like ghost flames and such.
heatsinker May 20th, 06, 05:55 PM Wow John, I just spent the last half hour looking at your pics on webshots.....You are a real craftsman. The 1st pic didn't lead me to think you needed to totally strip it, see what I know.
Just wanted to say great job and can't wait to see it finished.

69RS-Yenko May 20th, 06, 08:19 PM Ghost Flames, I've done a few. I use a shade off the same color but on the darker side, then Use Pearl ( your choice ) and over reduce your mix about 200% to start and end with about 400% over reduced. Apply from front to back, working in stages to get that even faded look Wet bedding helps, that is to over reduce clear about 400% and put the clear on the area before you paint. It will help the base stick and blend. Try it on a scrap you have based in the main color first. Keep in mind you will not notice most of it until you clear it, so take your time and use a LED flashlight in the dark to see the fade before you clear it for good. Good luck hope that info helps.

Thanks that gives me an idea of what we need to do. I want to see the stripe, but don't want it contrasting as much as black and silver.
Heatsinker:
Thanks for the compliment, but I can't take credit. I bought the car from a friend who had it in his garage for 17 years. I originally planned to just buff the paint and tune it up. I never could get the car running right (cam was bad), so I sent it up to my dad in Michigan. He rebuilt the motor and trainy, I went to visit and rebuilt the sub-frame. He passed away in October, and my cousin and I went up north and got the car which was in pieces. My cousin used to paint for a living. He is pretty impressive, I have learned a lot, but have a long way to go.
The car really looked clean when I bought it, but once we got the paint and bondo off, we saw we needed to do some sheet metal repairs. Not as much rust, but bad repairs. There was 1/2 inch of bondo in the roof because of the two little holes, where it ran under something. They were a master with bondo though, you couldn't tell (even on black).
Anyway, the buff job and tune up turned into a 2 year project. I think we have 2 to 3 months to go and I am chomping at the bit. :-)
Johnny Boy May 21st, 06, 09:54 AM John, I noticed that the car is on a rotissorie and the quarters are off the car, do you have some kind of brace on the car that I have never seen? I have always asked the question on Team Camaro "Can I replace panels on my 67 coupe and have it on the rotissorie at the same time?" I always got a resounding NO or better not. The consenses is to have it on the front frame and rear axel. Can you or anyone chime in?
jhilts May 21st, 06, 05:06 PM We replaced one quarter at a time. However, you may be correct, my cousin has been out of the paint body business over 20 years, so it may be true. If anyone knows why you shouldn't please let us know. We have 3 more cars that will go on the rotisserie.
I know you have to brace convertibles, any information would be appreciated.
prostreet69camaro May 22nd, 06, 06:34 PM I just minitubbed and changed quarter panels on a 69 camaro. I did them one at a time and had no problems. It was on a rotessiere.
I have the ghost flames on my camaro. All I did was paint my whole car the base color. Then added 4 table spoons on pearl purple to the paint for the front end. Then sprayed the flame part with the new mixed paint. Then I tipped the flames with aridiscent ( spelling ) paint that changes color. They look good in the sun but are sometimes hard to see.
Johnny Boy May 22nd, 06, 07:36 PM Anyone else on the rotissorie thing, becase if I can do my quarters one at a time on the roto and not run into problems then that saves me a ton of time in the garage!!!
RicocheT25 May 22nd, 06, 08:50 PM I had mine on the rot, took it off to do the quarters though b/c I read on here and heard elsewhere (mainly the guy helping me with the 1/4's) that its good to have the car level and supported
