I have searched the archive for and gathered info. about cowl hoods but still left with some unanswered questions. Is a 2" cowl hood the minimum height needed to clear a SB with a Victor Jr. intake, 1" spacer and Holley 4150 750HP? A friend has said that an SS hood clears my setup with a 1/2" to spare. Do SS hoods have functional cowl induction air boxes separte from the engine compartment and how high is the cowl? I would like to keep the cowl as low as possible, due to being vertically challanged at 5'8", and don't want any vision impairment issues. Also, are there any fiberglass hoods that have funcitonal cowl hoods. Some manufactures recommended here have cowl hoods but are not functional in that they don't have air boxes separate from the engine compartment. I've gathered that Glasstec and Harwood are good choices but can't find any company web sites for further technical info. to see if they are true functional cowl hoods.
Thanks for your help.

Buy a stock height 69 Z-28 cowl induction hood. (steel or glass)
I have a '68 with a stout 327 running the tall Victor Jr intake (#2999 it has the 1" spacer built in!) and a 750 Holley DP. A 3" air cleaner fits under this hood with a bit of clearance!
SS hoods while, bumped up in the middle, never had functional 'scoops'. The grilles in them are just for show!
I am slightly more vertically challenged than you, at only 5'7", and I don't have any vision problems with the cowl induction hood. Old Camaros aren't exactly the "clear vision leader" anyway with their raked back front and rear glass!! But, I don't notice that the problem is made any worse by the hood scoop.
My '85 IROC was way, way worse!! that thing had 4 feet of car that I couldn't see from the drivers seat!! And that thing had more glass than a greenhouse!!

OK - I figured out how to get a Vic Jr and a 1" spacer under a stock flat hood. It is very tight though.
What I did was get an old 1" drop base and cut the lip that sits on the carb body another 1/2". I also had to put a 1/2" diameter dimple about 1/8" deep in two spots to clear the float adjust screws. I'm sure this setup is not ideal, since the distance from the bottom of the air cleaner lid to the top of the carb choke housing is only about a 1/4", but it seems to run just fine.
I'll be putting a cowl hood on this winter too though.
