View Full Version : Wanted - small, lightweight traction bars

I have a 68 with some mild (but noticeable) wheel hop. I was using Caltrac J-Bar traction bars and they worked good, but they're big, heavy, ugly, noisy and were making for a hard ride.

I'm looking for something that will stop the wheel hop without affecting ride quality and appearance too much. Any suggestions?

many thanks

Multi-leaf car??

Maybe, just maybe, you can get by by just clamping each leaf's end tight on the front half of the springs and not have to run slappers??

Otherwise do a search for Lakewood under my name and read what I've done to make mine.

or if all else fails get the lakewood bars at autozone or others sell for 40 bucks...they work but are ugly and hang down on a camaro..i had them on my car with the old worn out leafs and they stopped the wheel hop but i thought they were ugly..then got stiffer springs and stopped both problems...handling and wheel hop

If you are running monoleafs, yes the ride quality suffers greatly if you attempt to use the traction bar as your only means of controlling wheel torque. That being said, there are no "light, small, beautiful, quiet" traction bars. Traction bars are by definition a crutch to controlling suspension that are more elegantly controlled by other means (a four link, ladder bars with sliders, CalTracs, or my all time favorite, though blasphemous to consider on a Camaro, is the cure developed by "Hot Rods From Hell" using GMC torque arms and coil springs).

Does anyone make them out of aluminum instead of steel? I would think this is a common request, as the traction bars are "unsprung" weight and as such, adversely affect ride quality.

I have added one clamp to the front part of the springs (multi-leaf). I have more clamps, so I'll try adding another........

pdq67, I think I found your "Lakewood" post. You got any pics of your homemade bars? They sound interesting, but not very solid................But then again, for a street car with street tires, they probably don't need to be solid. As I said above, I am just having a small amount of wheel hop. It shouldn't take much to correct it. Just take a little of the twist off the spring-wrap.
