As most of you already know, one of my freetime hobbies is R/C Flying. Someone sent me this video of a guy who owns a Radio Controlled Turbine powered $4000 F/18 HORNET. Look what happens http://media.putfile.com/F-18-CRASH

From the video it seems the turbine (yes a real turbine) jet engine failed, the plane lost thrust and so it did not have enough thrust to remain airborne. Thats a heavy jet and its not designed to 'glide to safety' like my 36" Wing Warrior Ezipper (Total cost about $600 haha)

If you can afford a $4000 toy plane, you can afford to smash it and not cry about it as you're buying a new one.

The guy that sent it to me said that the pressurized fuel line ruptured

Thats nothing, check out this monster:

23 foot wingspan, 330 lbs loaded with fuel. Holds 22L of Jet fuel. Powered by 8 wren MW54 gas turbine engines each producing 12 Lbs of thrust. Each engine probably cost about 4 grand.

Now look at what happened to it:

Pilot error was the unofficial cause.

The B52 is just awesome! Too bad, definately pilot error IMO.

I was at the Los Angeles Sepulveda Dam Basin RC airplane park on Saturday with my two sons. We must be living right since it happened to be the L.A. Jets club day. I have a picture of an A-10 Thunderbolt (my personal favorite real-life aircraft) that was flying that day. I could not believe how realistic the planes are. Truly amazing, both in form and price.

Heres a bunch of model jet crashes, looks like a very expensive hobby.

Has some weird german heavy metal music to go along with the video.

I have a buddy that spent years scratch building a jet powered Gulfstream G5. It had 2 jet engines that put out 8 lbs of thrust each and cost $4400 apiece. The engines ran on propane and we had to use compressed air from a scuba tank to spool them up before light-off.

The day of the inaugural flight there were about 50 friends gathered to witness the event. The airplane took off and flew for about 30 seconds before the tail broke off and in she went. My buddy and I loaded up hundreds of pieces, the largest of which were the engines, into the back of my Blazer and we drove away and had a few cleansing ales.

It was a sad way to end what should have been a wonderful day. Great hobby when it goes right, expensive hobby when it goes wrong.
