View Full Version : Sinking of a great Lady -- USS Oriskany Everett#2390 May 23rd, 06, 08:36 AM http://www.irishmansoftware.com/Oriskany.htm Vintage 68 May 23rd, 06, 09:03 AM Thanks Everett  Interesting reading. I caught the end of the story on the evening news the other night - but, they had small terrible pictures (superimposed next to the smiling achor while she talked her fool head off about how good it is for nature...) and didn't explain much about the ship, where exactly it was sunk or it's past history. John trex70 May 23rd, 06, 03:52 PM When I was in the Navy 89-99, we had a chance to sink an old tanker. We did it pre deplyment in 1998. It was pretty cool. There was our battle group all lined up and we took turns. Our ship, USS Simpson, got to fire one SM-1 surface to surface missile and fired about 50 shots from our 76MM canon. I am not sure what the other ships got to shot, but it is hard to bring down a tanker!! ChevyThunder May 23rd, 06, 04:18 PM Hey ! Isn't that the carrier from Top Gun...either Cruise was on it or it was the one that drifted into enemy waters that started the hero's rise to fame.....how dare they sink it ! I bet Tom could lift it with the healing powers of L Ron Hubbards Dianetics nikkisdad May 23rd, 06, 05:08 PM I hate to see this, can you imagine what that ship is worth in scrap iron? Of course we could not do much with the iron anyway, we have pretty much given up on steel production in this country. Now we get to buy high priced foriegn steel. Hope that reef can recoup the 20 million spent on it. Camaroinaz May 23rd, 06, 05:36 PM Actually it is the carrier that Tom Cruises' character's Dad served on in the movie. Rich69RS/SS May 24th, 06, 06:20 PM My buddy served as a seaman (boiler cleaning) then a cook on that ship (Oriskany) during the Vietnam era. He told me some great sea stories and cooking stories about his time on that ship. |
