Can someone please answer me this question. The "CAUTION FAN" sticker I see so much on 69 Camaro radiator shrouds is it suppose to be there? I have heard yes and I have heard no! Anybody know the correct answer?

Nope, it's a Ford part that some folks feel compelled to stick on, and some vendors just love to sell them. :(

It's funny...so many pictures are out there showing that Ford sticker on Chevys that restorers start believing it themselves! Then it just sort of snowballs after that.

The best is when a certain Camaro parts warehouse started listing them in their catalogs...!

I feel ashamed! There was one on my 68Z and I was completely clueless until Team Camaro set me straight. I scraped that crap off quick!

Right up there with the Fan Shroud decal is the mostly overused, incorrectly, infamous "GM" foil door sticker.

LOL

I've got two of those to take off too.... Any suggestions on getting the metal foil stickers off without damaging the paint?

Hey guys
I had always wondered why Chev and Fords had the same decal. I rationalized that both mfgs had the same supplier.
I'm a long time Mercury owner and as such was once the VP of the Cougar Club of America. Searching the web today to see if I could have somehow made a difference regarding this mythology ( I hadn't, search caution fan and the original myth perpetuates and the correct info for whatever reason does not show...read on) I found your discussion worthy of comment.
The rule book the CCoA use for judging they "gleaned" from the MCA calls out this decal, so many think that 60s muscle cars got them as well which is completely false. I've worked on these cars since I was a lad and have 30 years experience. Never had one originally. Not till 72.
I took an unbelievable amount of criticism trying to let those guys know that the Caution Fan decal did not appear till 1972 after the new flex fan was breaking blades and caused a death or more.
Since 72 Ford put the decals on the shrouds they sold at dealership parts replacement. Originals never had them as I proved finally w/o a doubt using our master parts catalogue.
So the decal is incorrect for all 60s Ford and Chevy products.
Next time you see one installed be sure and tell them - ford guys just love to find that out...especially from chev crowd,.lol
Any of the pre 72 FoMoCo crowd shelby mustang etc all those guys who have em have it wrong.
You can read about it all on www.mercurycougar.net (http://www.mercurycougar.net) search caution fan there are several threads relating and quite a bit of heat associated with the topic so much in fact I ended up being banned even though I had the right info. Somethings don't make sence...

Hope you find the information useful.

I'm not sure, but I "think" the sticker falls into the, "It's your car, do what you like..." category. :)

Although I have seen many full restoration cars on Ebay with the sticker. The Ebay guys couldn't all be wrong, could they. :)

Its the fact that you do see these decals everywhere that so many think they are supposed to be there.
This becomes a problem on the judging field when an old guy like me who knows whats right finds hisself up against some young guys or guys w/o the background quoting from the rule book when the rule is inaccurate or in your case not even a GM part.

That lil stickers caused a lotta fights, lol.

I imagine every single part falls into the "its your car" bracket but for concourse judging accuracy is imo critical.

Well at least you guys now know something most car buffs don't!
And I now know GM wasn't supposed to have them either.

It is ok to slam a car, put big rims on it, paint it neon green, etc... But once that caution sticker shows up, all bets are off. :)

I was at our monthly Camaro meeting last night and our newest member had one on his 68 SS car. We were going to "enlighten" him, but didn't have the heart after he told us how he had trouble finding the "right caution fan sticker" :) I have seen worse than a caution fan sticker on a first gen...

Well I guess I got lucky- I put one on my 67 camaro, per the catalog...it would not stick when shroud was hot...

I guess the radiator shroud knew it did not belong and was kicking it off!

Imagine that...

I also wouldn't have known about this if it wasn't for reading at this site. Now I notice it at cars shows regularly.

Here's one from the Springfield, OH show last month:

When I bought my 67 project car from my friend, he gave me a new set of foils door stickers and a new caution fan sticker that he had bought for when he finished the car. Makes me chuckle to think about it now that I know better.

This reminds me of the time I was standing in line at the parts counter when a woman in front of me said she needed a new "Caution Fan" because hers had cracked. Took awhile for the parts guys to figure this one out.
Turned out she was referring to the fan shroud :) On her '69 Camaro!!

Not my world at all, I think the folks here are able to judge others for themselves. For you to come here and your only communication be name calling and trying to out someone shows bad judgment on your part. Why didn't you take this to the site owner before throwing flames at others. Your points might have held some water that way.

By the way I have read every word posted by the person you are trying to warn the world about and haven't been presented with anything that warrants anything you claim... At this point that leaves you looking like a troll. You are warning us about someone posting their opinion on a Caution Fan sticker after all! :clonk:

We are all big boys and girls here if you have any further issues to discuss with reguard to this subject please e-mail them to admin@camaros.net

I think if one is of a mind to buy a Ford, he might also be likely to stick his fingers in the fan, hence the warning. We Chevy guys know better.

Yeah, right!

Is there a template for the sticker. I am compleating my rag top and I want to know exactly how far from the leading edge of the shroud it should be. I am assuming that it is centered?

I was told that it was just slapped on with no regaurds to alignment. I find that hard to belive that a GM assembly line worker would just slap something as important as a fan caution sticker on a first Generation.........lol

I thought a little humor would put this on track. I hate to see the flameing and such. It is only a sticker and if you like to have one even if its on your desk top fan (Jeff you have all the neat stuff) or if you are worried that you would stick you fingers in the fan and need a reminder from time to time (BPOS...lol ) you should do it.

As far as judges and concours goes well the owner will find out soon enough whats what. New guys old guys and the gals that enjoy these cars should share the joy.....nothing wrong with passing along tech info on these cars, but maybe like this: my opion is this based on this....or cool dude that is far out...

Thanks for the open fourm Team Camaro........

There are instances at car shows where you might find literature in the seat of your car explaining the misplaced sticker. How could I resist that?:)

The sticker debate will rage on as long as there are Camaros that have them. Those little stickers even visit Barrett jackson from time to time. You know those cars...unrestored 100% factory originals. :)

Sorry, but I was going to bring this up again anyway. Have any of you guys seen the lastest issue of Muscle Car Review? There is an absolutely gorgeous Lemans Blue RS Z/28 in there that has to have the most meticulus detail on chalk marks etc. etc. The text claims that the car is a "997 out of 1000" point car, the highest ever, and there, big as lif on two separate pages, is the notorious fan sticker. Will post pics if requested.

Are you guys SURE it doesn't belong there?????

Rant mode on:

I hate to say it but MCR just ain't what it used to be ever since Primedia got there grubby little hands on it. I started with that rag when it was Classic Cars of the 60's back in the early 80's. It quickly became my favorite magazine, supplanting Super Chevy. I was really peeved when Primedia sent me a letter stating that they'd folded MCR into Hot Rod, terminated my MCR subscription and folded it into my Hot Rod subscription. This was back in 2002 or 3 and it gave me a subscription to Hot Rod good til 2009! Then I come to find several months ago that MCR is still around (started up again? IDK) when I saw it on the magazine stand at the grocery store (I was looking for Camaro Performers - How DO you subscribe? I've never seen any info).

OK, rant mode off.

At any rate the "Caution - Fan" sticker is a Bozo NONO!
