: 427 high Deck fit under stock 68 SS hood?
Bob D Jul 11th, 04, 11:15 AM I got my 68 rs/ss camaro as a project car and it didnt have a drivetrain in it when I bought it. I want it back to stock looking and I also need to find an engine. I have a lead on a 427 high deck but am unsure if it will fit under the stock hood. I really dont want to change out hoods. My guess is that it will since I think the 396 is pretty much the same exterior dimensions. The high deck is only .4" higher but the carb/intake wont be sitting any higher at all.
Appreciate any input.
Bob
smits67 Jul 12th, 04, 04:55 AM It will be a challange. I like the tall deck motor, but trying to shoe it into a stock chassis is not as easy as one might think. On one side of the motor you will have heater box interference, and on the other side power brake booster interference. I think you could use an LS6 or similar low-rise intake manifold in conjunction with the spacers(required when using a STD deck manifold on a tall deck block) and a short element air cleaner and get it under a cowl hood...but not a stock flat one.
Here is a link containing some pictures of a TD427 in my 68 Camaro. I got mine in only because it is heavily modified(no power brakes, no heater, and a 4" fiberglass cowl hood).

Bob D Jul 12th, 04, 01:56 PM Hi Smits, thanks a ton for the info. I can just cry now. graemlins/sad.gif I REALLY want to keep the stock hood. I can likely mod the heater box so that isnt a huge concern. Also there are smaller diameter power brake boosters, right? That should work for me, what do you think?
I actually plan on fuel injecting it, so that might help my cause, Ill have the fuel rails on each side as opposed to the carb on top.
Do you have any close up shots of how close the valve covers are to where the heater box and Power brake booster are?
Thanks again!
Bob
Bob D Jul 12th, 04, 02:07 PM Also, what about wiper motor? Will it clear?
Looking at your pictures, I think the smaller brake booster just might work. I cant tell about the heater box though...
Bob D Jul 12th, 04, 02:28 PM isnt the 396 ALMOST the same size? Isnt the TD427 only .4" inches different? Thats only less than half an inch! Will that .4 inches really screw me up that badly?
smits67 Jul 12th, 04, 02:55 PM Hey Bob,
If you are like me and love a challange...then, where there is a will there is a way.
Yes, I think you could make it work, but heater box notches and small diameter power brake boosters will vary from the "stock" look.
Man, I am right there with you if you decide to do it! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I like the tall deck(no,I mean I really really like those TD engines!! :D ), BUT it will not come easy if you want to retain that fatory appearance. BUT IT CAN BE DONE!!
Also, let me warn you about the 4-ring pistons that a factory tall deck has. They don't take to RPM as well as a 3-ring piston. Email me, I will be glad to give you my ph number and discuss the pro's and con's with you.
I hope you do use the tall deck......then I will not feel so alone! ha

smits67 Jul 12th, 04, 03:00 PM Also, I might have to retract my statement that you could not get it under a stock hood. I think you could if you got creative.

ps I won't be around my computer until tomorrow morning. Feel free to email me and I will contact you tomorrow.
Bob D Jul 12th, 04, 03:13 PM Awesome, you are a god. And exactly the motivation I need. Thanks to you I just bought it smile.gif Im honestly not too concerned about stock look under the hood (o I wouldnt be fuel injecting it ;)
I just found this thread: http://www.prestage.com/Message+Boards/Default.aspx?Action=ShowPost&PostID=4019
Id love to talk to you on the phone about this.. my real email is group44_us@yahoo.com if you want to send me your ph # there, it would be great.
Oddly enough, Ricks camaro catalog lists that the 9" booster will still clear the tall deck blocks.
oh this is going to be fun. I cant wait to dive into this puppy! I look forward to hearing from you!
