mbmmca May 25th, 06, 04:49 AM Last my husband heard, (beg. of May) they were going to build a modified version of the new camaro for 2010. Exactly what has been modified? I'm trying to find out.
kencar69 May 25th, 06, 05:20 AM If they plan on waiting until 2010 then it will need to be highly modified, it will be a whole new market by then.
If they do bring her back it won't be that long.
pdq67 May 25th, 06, 06:18 AM I think I recently read in the auto section of the Detroit News that GM is going to come out with like 12 new engines in the near future..
Go figure???
Their success rate with new engines sucks imho!
Revamped older p/r designs and the Corvair and Vega jobbers, plus, the V-6 in the Fiero is why.. 502's that burn a quart of oil in less than a 1000 miles too.........
The totally rediculuosly(Sp?) high-priced LT-5 Merc. Marine/Lotus/'Vette DOHC jobber is in here too..
JMHO..
They'd better save themselves say, $10,000,000,000 or so and re-pop the old cast-iron SB block AND install a MODERN 5 or 6 bolt head top-end on it and save all that money so they can pay the Boss a $100,000,000 bonus!!
If Pete Ardema can create a SB SOHC conversion on the cheap, why the hell can't GM????

nashcar May 25th, 06, 06:28 AM I heard from a reliable source that GM has given it a number. This is is what they do to start production wheels in motion from what I understand.

By 2010, the old/new Mustangs will be classics. The gap between the Camaro and the Mustang back in the day was only about 3 years. Why the delay now? I'll buy a Challenger first if it comes out before the Camaro. I'm not waitng for GM to decide when to bring back a car that they "know" will sell. The new Camaro should already be the car we drive when we go to the store to buy parts for our 1st Gens.

I respectfully disagree. I think the LS series of engines (and their derivatives, the 5.3, 6.0 etc. ) are a big success. I think GM's styling is in the toilet.
Larger Dave May 25th, 06, 08:18 AM And I hate to knock Paul about the ZZ502, it has loose oil rings to produce horse power not conserve motor oil. It clearly states in sales brochure that they installed low tension oil control rings to reduce rotational friction (which puts more ponies to the crank).

CrossRamZ11 May 25th, 06, 10:48 AM Corvair? Vega? Fiero? Your kidding right? Why don't you try and come up with some examples that are not 20 years old....GM has consistently outstanding powertrains, always highly ranked in JDPower Top 10 Powertrains,in several cases they ARE the selling feature of the vehicle, Duramax, Northstar, LSX are all very robust, very durable and very popular...Yes, there are issues now and then, but every manufacturer has them from time to time. Why would GM build a SOHC "smallblock", when we already have the OHV LS7 putting out 505+ and meets emission criteria...I would like to see Petes engine do that. I understand that you have little idea of what is involved in designing, building and certifying a powertrain to meet current and future stringent emissions regulations while meeting performance targets..it is a little more involved than "bringing back the iron SB" and throwing some gimmick heads on it. ....Active Fuel Management, Direct Injection, Variable Intake, Variable Cam Phazers, Variable Valve Timing, Clutch to Clutch 6 speed Transmissions....These are the way of the future for new vehicles...You cannot look forward when you live in the past.....

Yep. IMO Displacement-on-Demand systems are where it's at right now, since they will allow us to have large V8s that are also very fuel efficient.
