View Full Version : Summit Direct Fit Rads?
rlovell383 May 25th, 06, 03:58 PM Anybody out there using the summit, direct fit aluminum radiators for 67-69 camaros? My OEM type copper/brass crapped out on me, and I want an aluminum one to save some weight, but dont feel like spending 500 bucks:eek: .
I wonder who makes them? How do they look/fit and most importantly, cool? Thanks,
Randy
jbhoops May 25th, 06, 04:35 PM buy a alumitech radiator nice
summit radiator made in japan sold as made in Usa
Mkelcy May 25th, 06, 04:35 PM I just got one and am working on the bracketry for the Mark VIII fan. It looks like Northern makes the radiator. Can't comment on fit or cooling yet, but will post up when I've got it in.
Neil B May 25th, 06, 04:44 PM I have a Summit Direct Fit for my 3rd Gen Camaro. It's made by Northern and it is a high quality piece. It cools my 427 BBC in a body style notorious for bad cooling. I wouldn't call it a 'direct fit' however. It required mods to the upper shroud and it had a bottom draincock that interfered with the rad support (had to be plugged and cut flush).
pdq67 May 25th, 06, 06:16 PM Heck, I have onna Summit's house aluminum rad's in my car that is also from Northern Aluminum Rad!
Got it on sale a couple of years ago for like $150!!
It cost me about $20 more in aluminum stock and some little bolts, pop-rivets and such to be able to bolt it onto my rad support and even tho it isn't a bolt-on like stock was cheap enough and GOOD enough to do what I want it to do!!

JimM May 25th, 06, 06:34 PM I put one in the 68 a couple weeks ago. It is clearly marked "Northern Radiator"
The only mod I had to do was elongate the mounting holes a lil, they were a 1/4" total too far apart. I also polished the tanks and top support bar, and fitted it with a custom alluminum shroud.
With the stock rad, I was at 195 degrees, up to 210 driving fast on the highway. Now it's at 175 (180 thermostat) and never moves.
Here's a pic:

Randy,
I will offer you a hand fabricated(made in the USA) PRC "floor model" radiator w/o transmission cooler for far less than the retail price. It measures: 26" wide (20" core) and 18" tall.... send me an email at sales@streetrodstuff.com for details.

Eliminator540 Sep 9th, 06, 01:31 PM Do the Summit radiators really have a blue water fill neck like shown in the picture?
Are they 100% TIG welded or are they epoxy?
Does the SBC with AC shroud fit this radiator well?
Is this the correct radiator for a BBC or SBC with AC? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?CP=1&part=SUM-380456&N=700%200&Ntt=SUM-380456%20or%20SUM-380455&Ntk=KeywordSearch&rsview=sku&Ns=
JimM Sep 9th, 06, 01:39 PM The summit rads do have a blue plastic neck. They are 100% welded except the neck plastic neck of course.
