Just installed 489 in my 68 and went with the long water pump. Not a whole lot of room to put in fan. about 3.5 inched from radiator (AFCO aluminum) to water pump pulley. I know in 69 they changes to the long water pump also. Anyone else with this problem and if so what type of fan are you using and what is the fittment like? Thanks

Patrick

you've got this kind of room ? (click pic for enlargement)

I ended-up with a 2360 cfm 16" Spal , off-set mounted favoring the driver side. after installing a March aluminum V-belt pulley, I got 1/2" clearance between the fan motor and w/p pulley hub.
I can e-mail some installed pics if you'd like, but it would need to be later in the week.

82 Vettrin,
Yeah, I got about 3 1/2" using your measurement criteria. Where did you get your Spal fan and what does the "Spal" stand for anyway? What motor are you running and does that fan keep it cool? Thanks. I'll be out of town for a week, but would love to see your pics of the mounted fan. I will also have to favor mine towards the driver's side as well. Thanks.

I purchased mine thru "Alumitech" Don. http://www.chevellecooling.com/
Don is an excellent vendor to work with, but there are others on this site as well; I just happened to choose him .. page thru some of the other posts concerning fans, cooling, and radiators if you want more options.
my motor is a mild street-build 454. puts out a ton of heat. I've had much-o problems with overheating, some of which I've come to learn were of my own creation :o (refer to my thread here: "what is the heat limit of a 454") you'll see some of what I've endured... and accomplished. as of this posting, the cooling system is operating satisfactorily. I had two goals when I started: cool it in time for the NHRR show @ Bowling Green, Ky., Jun 16-18, and the Woodward (Detroit) cruise in August. so far, I'm
contact me when you're ready for some pics and measurements.

I also had about 3.5" of clearance between the pulleys and the radiator when I installed my big block . I bought a Perma-Cool High Performance electric fan from Jeg's. I got the 16" which requires 3.75" depth and pulls 2950 cfm (#771-19115) and goes for $104.99. I mounted it off center toward the drivers side as far as it would go. I have had no thermostart, just a water restrictor and I use Water Wetter. I have an aluminum radiator with 2 1" cores and a thermal sensor for my fan which turns it on at 190 and shuts off at 170. The motor temp has never gone over 190.

Sometimes the dual Spal fans fit better than the single because the motors are not in the center where the water pump is. The dual Spal fan is probably the best out there flowing right about 4000 cfm, 2300 cfm from your single is probably not enough.

ps. Spal is a brand name.

I used a 95 Taurus 3.8ltr. fan and a short aluminum Moroso pump and used 1967 L88 Corvette brackets works like a champ on my 13:1 BBC.

Yeah, I have heard that the Taurus fans are good too. Also the Lincoln Mark VII fans.

MARK 8 has to be trimmed. Taurus fan is much better fit!!

I agree about the cfm ,, but dual 11s wouldn't fit (my car). the RH fan-motor housing didn't clearance long water pump hub. however ,, if Spal would consider dropping that RH motor about 1/4 ~ 1/2" or so ,, that'd work like a charm ! (and I'd be their first customer) !!
you guys that are talking about the Taurus fan:
how does it mount ?
got any pictures to reference ?
I'm all-ears to better ideas ;)
AND , I want to add that (beings this thread is posted in "Performance" instead of "Heating & Cooling" .... the absence of mechanical fan, and addition of all aluminum pulleys, has made my car a different beast

The most important thing is that the fan be spaced back from the radiator core and installed in a shroud that pulls air through the entire core. That's almost always the difference between a fan that cools and one that doesn't.

Mark VIII fans are the most powerful fans on the market but, they have HUGE motors and you will need 5.5 - 6" minimun even with trimming to get it to fit. Flex-a-lite just came out with a new fan (p/n 180) that has a shround and needs ~4" of clearance and moves 3300CFM.

Eric, can you give the part number for the dual Spal fan you mentioned? I didn't see it when I was shopping for a fan set-up. I bought the Flex-a-lite, haven't tested it yet though.
