Hey guys, I finally decided to start on the heat/defrost install today, the car didn't have anything when I bought it. This is the first time I even thought of attempting something like this. I pulled the plate that was on the firewall where the heater box goes and the opening looks small and peiced together somehow. The heater core tubes aren't even close to being able to fit through the holes, about 1/2 inch to close together. I need suggestions on what to do! Am I overreacting or am I in over my head. Hopefully these pics will help explain. If it helps it is a sb 350:confused:

Kinda hard to see from your photos, but it looks like it may have been an AC car that someone filled in to use a non-AC cover and core.
here's what a non-AC firewall looks like.

The existing hole is about half that size. The right side of the hole, from the engine compartment, looks just like your picture. But the left has been filled in to make the overall hole size about half that of the picture. Any idea why it has 3 core tube holes? Could someone have tried to use a diffrent inner box and core possibly. any suggestions on how I can get all the new heater stuff I bought to fit, work and look respectable.

You are going to have to make a templet like the one from a original non A/C car. Do you know anyone that has a car torn apart or someone that can make a templet for you. You will have to line it up on the fire wall and cut the hole plus add some metal for the existing A/C hole because it is bigger than a non A/C box. Also if I was changing the box, I would make it a big block heater core. Then the heater hoses would not go behind the passenger valve cover. If you have a small block heater setup you can buy the parts to convert it to a big block car. Also with the big block box you will not need the holes on the far right for the heater hoses. They come out of the heater box.

I don't have access to a template, But If someone could give me the demensions fo the non-ac hole I could probably make it work. I didn't even think about making it a big block setup. Since I have to pull the fender anyway to remove the box, I think I will just use a bb core and box just so I won't have any clearance issues. Thanks for the advice
