: 67 Caliper Options
Smokin '67 Jun 2nd, 06, 08:39 PM I have a '67 Camaro with front disc brakes. They the four piston design and are leaking again. I'd like to upgrade to the single piston design. Is the '69 Camaro caliper a bolt-on replacement or do I need to chance the spindles and rotors. I've read through many previous posts looking, but haven't found the exact answer to this question. Any help is appreciated.
ohcscott Jun 2nd, 06, 10:44 PM caliper brackets, backing plates, hoses, lines, and brackets, to do it right. also you might have to relocate your bumpstops off the frame to the control arm, judging from past posts.
you can reuse the spindles and rotors.
you might be able to reuse the lines if you change the hoses to the correct length and maybe also to calipers with a different hose inlet location than the 69 camaro calipers to clear the bumpstops.
Since you have the disc lines, the bumpstop might not be an issue as it is with the drum conversion. The hose goes up instead of down.
here are some pics of a 67 with missing bumpstop and 69 calipers and hoses. He cured the hose rub with shorter hoses... I think from a 2ndgen.

If you look at some of the other pics in that album, you might see how the 69 lines run.
pdq67 Jun 3rd, 06, 07:02 AM I think you can get your 4-piston calipers rebuilt with the ring-seals in the same spot as the big single piston's ring-seals are in so that they don't leak any more!!
NOT on the pistons!!!
You might want to call 'Vette Brakes, SSB or maybe Master power brakes..

I'm almost positive one of them does this conversion b/c of the stock ones leaking over time!!
I just don't know how much it will cost??

ohcscott Jun 3rd, 06, 09:51 PM I think they just convert from cup seals to o-ring. They wont actually relocate the seals, dammit ;) They'd have to bore it out pretty far and resleeve with a groove to do that I think.
should seal better with the o-rings anyway i guess.
Check your rotor runout and bearing play with a dial indicator (ball joint type mount is easiest).
Either one can cause the cup seals to leak on those calipers if it's excessive. Rotor runout should be .004" or less. Bearing endplay should be .001-.005". Either would have to be about double to cause a leak.
pdq67 Jun 4th, 06, 06:07 PM I thought they did bore them out and SS re-sleeve them??
That's why I mentioned price b/c if I recall right, it was pricey!!!!

Larger Dave Jun 4th, 06, 06:31 PM What pdq67 is remembering is that Stainless Steel Brake Corporation (SSBC) got their start reworking the four puck Corvette calipers (which came as an option on Camaros in '67, and '68) by machining them to accept stainless steel sleeves. I thought they were still doing it, but it isn't listed in their on line catalogue.
Their web site can be found at: http://www.ssbrakes.com/ and it will have contact numbers to see if they still offer this service. If nothing else they sell new aluminum three piston and four piston bolt on calipers that are lighter and come in choice of colors.

Hammered Jun 4th, 06, 07:21 PM Those calipers are being reproduced now (with SS sleeves) for the same cost as rebuilding. Contact http://www.rightstuffdetailing.com/

JimM Jun 4th, 06, 07:33 PM Yearts ago, I put a set of calipers from vettebrake on a 69 vette. They do great work, and a set of thier SS sleeved calipers will be the last set your car would ever need. Even 20 yhears ago, it was pricy, near a grand for all four.
They do still rebuild and sleeve these calipers, and they will also repair and return your originals if you want to stay with your "born with" units.
