View Full Version : spun bearing?
meanZ Jun 6th, 06, 08:10 PM ok well i went and got a good look at the block i found today...i would really like to get this block,b/c im getting and awesome deal, but would like to see what you guys think first....
this is the front main cap....the CAP itself looks normal, all tight and square,no eveidentce of any problems,as are the rest of the bearings registers on the block....
so,WTH caused this?a spun bearing?...if so,can it be fixed by a line bore/hone?im really just worried about the groove that keeps the bearing in place,is there anyway to fix this?
liek i said,id REALLY like this setup,if it can be fixed and still be somewhat cost affective(probably not in the hot rod dictionary )
so,let me know what you guys think...thanks Cody

BillK Jun 6th, 06, 08:21 PM Looks like it spun a bearing to me. Looks pretty bad actually, might be too worn to fix it correctly.
How about a picture of the cap, I bet its not the correct one for the block if it does not look worn too.
Only way to tell for sure is to bolt everything together and check it with a bore gauge and a straight alignment bar. I hope for your sake I am wrong, but I bet its no good.

sorry
meanZ Jun 6th, 06, 08:33 PM heres a pic of the main cap.....must not be the right cap b/c it doesnt show any damage that i can see..its gonna be studded so i dont have a problem having it bored/honed,but i dont want junk either :(

67 Plum Jun 6th, 06, 08:34 PM I am with Bill that looks bad. What block is it?
67 Plum Jun 6th, 06, 08:35 PM That cap wasnt on it when it spun the bearing.
BillK Jun 6th, 06, 08:38 PM Cody,
I dont think that block will be saveable, its probably too far gone to even align bore, at least not without moving the crank way up and causing all sorts of problems.
I would pass and find another block. Fill out your profile so we know where you are located, I might be able to find someone that has a better block in your area.

I would have to second Bills opinion. With what we have to look at it isnt looking good. I dont think its a good deal and I dont know what the price is. I would steer clear of it for a stock rebuild and especially for a performance engine. Surely there is another block out there or is this a number matching deal? I have seen worse repaired in must to situations but for the price to repair it you could buy a Dart block and have a chunk of money left over.
meanZ Jun 6th, 06, 08:38 PM its a 010 4 bolt main block thats already been short filled and punched out 0.060 and honed to fit a set of wiseco pistons here has to go with it...i can get a smoking deal on it,but if its not even fixable, ill have to pass....dang that sux, though i finally found a buildable block.....
67 Plum Jun 6th, 06, 08:50 PM Where are you at?
meanZ Jun 6th, 06, 08:50 PM thanks for all the help guys:beers:
camaronut79 Jun 7th, 06, 03:05 AM hes out of jacksonville florida, right?
meanZ Jun 7th, 06, 04:35 AM yep jax fl ;)
mox67 Jun 7th, 06, 09:22 AM I hate to say it, but theres probably a very good reason this block is such a good deal :)
Thats because its unusable!
I've been burned enough by "good deals" that honestly at this point I would rather pay more money up front, compared to being toasted 6 months down the line.
Larger Dave Jun 7th, 06, 10:21 AM Heres a thread I started that might be helpfull.
