I just bought a 327 that is freash but has been sitting for a while. Pulled pan and looks ok except 1 rod looks copper on big end half -- is shiney on end does not seem to be rust. I will probable tear down because i'm afraid of dirt , but any ideas on rod color. thanks for ideas!

the rod was probably damaged so they use copper to build it back up and machine it to spec.

Didn't think of that -- it's been 35 yrs since I played w/sbc -- need to jar my memory . So I take it that would be sop if rod was spun?

never heard of such a thing. Exactly where on the rod is this "copper"?

I hope he's speaking of the bearing, in which case it's worn and a complete disassembly is advisable.

Jim, I have seen this a couple of times myself. The whole entire lower half of the rod appears to be copper colored or plated, about half way up the beam of the rod. I would like to hear what the explanation is myself. Like I said it was only maybe two or three rods in my entire life like this. I remember one on my buddys 396 but I did not think to question anyone about it.

The Copper was used at the factory when a rod was machined a little too big on the large end. They would dip it in copper, or plate it somehow, to build it back up and save it. It is very common in GM and Chrysler engines. I have seen just as many small ends with it as large ends. There is nothing wrong with it.

I was going to say that one of the rods in the bottom end of my engine looks this way as well. The entire big end of the rod has a copper look to it.. This was a matched set of "X" rods and it has been that way since I got it. It has worked flawlessly through the years. Even though it looks suspect when you pull the pan..
