I got the sending unit out, looks good. What I found earlier was not the strainer that is pretty much intact. Looks like somebody for some reason put a pc. of paper-bag in it, why? I also found a small 1" L shaped pc. of metal in it, why? I throw up my hands..

The inside of the tank looks like new except for pcs. of what looks like chrystals, any ideas? I'm guessing bad elements in the gas. I want to clean it out better than what I got with the air hose. Is there any reason I should'nt fill it with water? I'm guessing if I don't empty it right and don't get gas in it right away it will rust but as long as I do that right is there a problem doing this? Thanks

I don't know about the crystals, but no harm in putting water in the tank. Just drain the water right away. Then blow it out as best you can, and fill it with gas within a day or two. Put some dry gas in the tank with the fillup, if you are concerned about residual water.

In the old days I used to drop and clean tanks on a regular basis. I can't account for what you found in the tank, as for cleaning, I always flooded them with water, emtied them, then stuck a wet and dry vac hose over the neck and let it suck air in through the sending unit/pickup hole. Leave it alone for a couple of hours and that should do it.
