I know a person that says he has a true Z-28 Camaro.
I would like to know what to look for to make sure I am buying what he calls a original Z-28 car. He has the engine apart to overhaul it. What numbers should i be looking for and where are they located.
Thanks Fred

First of all... what year is the car? we need all the info you have!
Alot of difference between 67,68 and 69. Not to mention all of the other generations!Need info from you in order to give input! where was car built, what month... year? Picture of build tag. Believe you me if there is one thing I have learned is just when you think you can prove your car is the real deal the crooks find a way a way to clone it! Larry

well, that depends alot on when it was built...

bottom line, should have a date code on the front pad followed by DZ, depending on when the car was built, it will either have the Vin just to the left of the date, or on the rough cast boss by the oil filter (this one is hard to see)

heads should be 186 castings, and the trans will have the same vin number and fairly clost date code stamped on the side of the case where it meets the bell housing.

the trim tag date code should match the engine assy within a few days or week, and depending on the date of the car, hopefully has an X33 or X77.. but if it was an early car, it migth have a smaller trim tag, or could be a transition where they used the larger tags, but hadn't institued the X codes yet... this all of course if it is a Norwood car... if it was built in Vay Nuys, it would have the smaller trim tag, and then you'll have to rely strictly on the numbers stamped on the engine.

there is alot more info, but this will get you started.

i'm sure there are many more on this website that can get you more info on the car, but these few things will pretty easily determine whether it has the correct parts on it... of course it could still be an original Z without the original motor and trans... but without the X code, it is harder to tell... and I'm not sure that you can honestly confirm an early 1969 Z28 without the original engine or trans... of course it shoudl have 4 leaf springs (not 5 like the 396 cars) but i think i've read about some Z28s coming with 5 leaf springs. ofcoruse thats only if the rear springs are original to the car. would have a 12bolt. front power disk brakes, (Unless it is a JL8 rear disk car) which would be very very rare... and couldn't have had Air Conditioning.

I don't know how much about these cars you know, but these facts are pretty common place these days.

good luck

Hey 69z28boy, your in my old stomping grounds. I'm from Taylor but now live in AZ. Sure miss the winters (ya right).

Couple of other things you can look for is does it have a tach? If so it should be a 6k-7k, 6k-7.5k, or a 6k-8k. 6k is the redline. This depends on the build date. It should also have front disks brakes, 3/8" single fuel line.
