I have a 1993 Camaro v6 3.4 fuel injected. My problem (if it is one) is that whenever I startup the engine or if I'm at a stopping point I can smell gasoline comming from somewhere in the dash or from the bottom for a few seconds. I don't believe the fuel lines are damaged, because whenever I remove the gas cap I can hear the compressed vapors come out. I recently replaced the spark plugs and wires and I noticed the smell after that, but then again, I never payed any attention to the smell before the change. The engine runs good, a tiny bit sluggish but not so much as to make the engine die or make me worry. I have rechecked the spark plugs to make sure they are on good and also checked the spark plug gaps. I have driven the car a lot so I don't believe there is gas leaking in the engine otherwise I think it would have gone up in flames by now. I think there is a leak in the exhaust close to the headers. Could this be why I smell gas? Thanks for the help. -noel

You might check the charcoal cannister. There is a line from the gas tank for vapor absorbtion. There are two other lines attached to the cap. One is attached to the intake plenum of manifold. The smaller line is Purge. This purge signal, again forom the throttle body, goes to the cannister cap, and opens the valve for the engine to purge the cannister of its stored vapors.

Any item in this system can lead to a gas vapor smell, similiar to sniffing the gas tank after removing the gas cap.

If you smell raw fuel, then you clearly have a leak in the fuel delivery system and it should be detected and repaired quickly.

Having an exhaust leak will give the exhaust gas smell similiar to sniffing the tailpipe, not close to raw gas or gas vapor.

Using your nose and tracking these different smells will aid in the detection of a leak. Hopefully, it will be an exhaust leak, cause vapors can ignite as well as raw gasoline.
