View Full Version : I want it REALLY bad
yellow69z28rs Jun 13th, 06, 10:35 PM I found a July 69 built car with a Oct. 68 motor. I originaly said this don't work. But the story goes like this. The fellow tells me he has contacted someone @ CRG who told him that towards the end (69) they had to use up whtever blocks they had, and the block has slight damage to it @ the corner by the starter. He said CRG told him that this is from being piled up for so long @ the factory??? Here is the real kicker the block has VIN stamping @ the pad and @ the oil filter.? The block is a JF code, AC, 4 speed car, 350 HP. This is my dream car and I dont think these #'s work, its killing me. The car is not advertised the fellow just inherited the car and I just happened to know a friend of his. Also its an x22 black convertible. Is there any truth to this story??
Thanks Guys
Robert
RamAirDave Jun 13th, 06, 11:14 PM Im not gonna doubt what the CRG guys say, because they know much more than myself.
But 9 months seems to be quite a long layover in the dates. It's interesting that the VIN is stamped in both places. I havent seen that before.
Maybe you can get a pic of the stampings on the engine for us to verify that they are legit.

yellow69z28rs Jun 13th, 06, 11:17 PM Thanks Dave, I will try to get pics up ASAP.
John65nova Jun 14th, 06, 06:45 AM From a manufacturing logistics standpoint, I wouldn't think they'd stockpile blocks for 9 months. I would think it would have been remelted before sitting for that long.
I'll be interested to see what the smarter people have to say about this. Just seems odd to me from a manufacturing efficiency standpoint.
JimM Jun 14th, 06, 07:21 AM I'd have to agree, 9 months is too long, and having the vin stamped in 2 places kinda reeks.
If you like the car, buy it. A restamp or NOM is not a killer after 38 years.
Jonesy Jun 14th, 06, 07:44 AM Get pictures of the pad stamping with the VIn and post all the numbers here (VIN, cowl tag etc)
Pics of everything. That way we can determine what you have.
yellow69z28rs Jun 14th, 06, 08:00 AM I defintley am going to post the pics ASAP. But it seems like most agree that this story is bogus. I just talked to Jerry M. and before I could get the dates out of my mouth said it sounds bogus as soon as told him about the 2 VIN stamps. Has anyone ever even heard of that? I raelly want it bad but it is 75k and I will have to sell my other cars to get it so this has got to be the real deal.
Thanks Again For Everyone Help
Jonesy Jun 14th, 06, 08:02 AM I have seen transmission VIN's stamped in 2 places, but not engines
Scott Taylor Jun 14th, 06, 08:23 AM I seriously doubt that it is the original engine. If I were you, I'd post a picture of the trim tag here, I'll bet it's bogus too. For $75K I would make damn sure I'm getting the real deal.
dragsterman Jun 15th, 06, 01:26 AM I have had cars with a 6 month spread and seen a few others. But that's a big streach.
yellow69z28rs Jun 15th, 06, 08:46 PM Guys thanks for the help but the guy want return my calls now that I want pics of everything. I guess that about clears up all my concernes.
Robert
Pacecarjeff Jun 15th, 06, 09:46 PM That seems like way too long a time.
I have never heard of blocks piling up for 9 months.
If a block was damaged it would have been cut up and melted.
No need to set it aside. - But you never really know.
jet_car2000 Jun 16th, 06, 05:54 AM Robert was the car at a place there close to Alex. ?? I will be coming to Alex in sept. thats where all of my moms folks are from Alex and Pineville area. Frank
Unreal Jun 16th, 06, 08:59 AM I once saw a never rebuilt L78 block with an october 68 cast date, and a May 69 assembly date.
Kurt S Jun 16th, 06, 11:11 PM The fellow tells me he has contacted someone @ CRG......
And exactly who did he talk with at CRG???
Noone in the group recalls making a statement like this.
Pics of the pad and tag would be needed to determine what's original, but I'm a doubter.....
yellow69z28rs Jun 17th, 06, 01:13 PM See next post
yellow69z28rs Jun 17th, 06, 09:56 PM The car is not in the immediate area but is w/in driving distance.
I did not ask who he spoke with @ CRG. Hopefully he still has the e-mail copys or can tell me who it was. He has not responded to me in a few days, but I now know where he works, and will tracking him early Monday.
Thanks
Robert
JohnZ Jun 22nd, 06, 05:36 PM At 300 per hour (5,500 per day), there's no way a block is going to "sit around" in an engine plant for nine months, and broken castings didn't get repaired - they got scrapped. He didn't talk to me either.
Leonard Blevins Jul 4th, 06, 09:16 AM John, i agree with you on the damaged blocks. As for blocks lying around for 9 months, i looked at several 69 L72 Camaros with real Docs in the past year with late build dates 09 and 10 with original engines with Jan cast dates on blocks VIN matching. The pad stamping corrolates with assy date of car and that tells me the engine sat for 9 months somewhere. This may be only for the L72s for 69 Camaros. I do not know. Wanted to let you know.
JohnZ Jul 4th, 06, 04:43 PM Almost anything is "possible", but certainly not probable, or not within what we consider normal practice; that's a real "outlier", but it's "possible".
Hank Williams Jr. Jul 4th, 06, 10:38 PM ..were you able to track him down , or get him on the phone?
yellow69z28rs Jul 5th, 06, 09:20 PM Yes I have been in touch w/him and I have someone coming to inspect the car next week. I will keep you posted. Thanks for everyones help espcialy the L72 info.
