Our family purchased a new 69 Camaro in June of 69. The car came equipped with the 230 inline 6, 3 speed manual, 10 bolt rear and rear monoleaf suspension. According to the VIN and trimtag the car should have an 8 cylinder(12347) however as stated above the car came from Norwood with the 6 cylinder. All other numbers match as the car is equipped. Is this a common occurance? Can someone shed some light on this?
Thanks,
Teresa

The Vin plate on top of the dash next to the drivers side bootom of the windsheild is where you need to look at a 6 Cyl car will be 123379 and a V-8 car will be 124379 this is where you determine if it was an original 6 Cyl or V-8 car not by the # on the cowl tag on the fire wall. Hope this helps

The cowl tag does not make a reference to the engine in its 12437 line. Visit www.camaros.org and review their decoding section. Here is part of it: cowl tag info (http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#CowlTag)
Field c - body style code (See also this explanation of why the Fisher style and VIN prefix differed.)
The two digit year ("67," "68," or "69") was followed by a five-digit "ST" body style code. The first two digits of the style code are the model code ("12") and the last two digits are body code ("37" for coupe and "67" convertible). In 1967 the third digit of the style code (the "x") was set to "4" for standard interior or "6" for custom interior. In 1968-69 the third digit was fixed at "4" for all models and had no meaning. While the Fisher style code is often confused with the first five digits of the VIN, the two sets of codes are different because of the different meaning of the third digit.
The VIN info. that will confirm 6 or 8 cyl is also there further down. :)
We'd love to see pics of your camaro. Very few 6 cylinders make it this far in life.
