I had this under another post, 'HP for the $$$', but w/o the partial VIN. Is the 'C' for 'Crate?' Trying to determine if I have a 1972 or 1980 TDT. Thanks!!:beers:

The Beerboy Jun 15th, 06, 06:50 AM Thanks guys! Trying to figure out if I've got a 307 or 350. So, is it possible to have a 1981 motor with a 1980 TDT?
elcamino Jun 15th, 06, 07:34 AM Has to be a 350, the CON VIN shows it is an 1981 model year engine irregardless of what some webs or books say.
Starting in 1980 the model years were shown as letters..
A - 1980
B - 1981<----you had an 8 in this position but I assumed it was a B. Did you verify the B?
C - 1982
etc
The Beerboy Jun 15th, 06, 08:35 AM Pic of parital VIN is at the house. Will verify tonite. Thanks for the expertise!
The Beerboy Jun 15th, 06, 07:57 PM Well, still looks like an 8 to me. Just signed up for membership, so when I get official email from Team Camaro, will post pic of engine VIN.
The Beerboy Jun 15th, 06, 08:23 PM This is my first picture post, so we'll see what happens!! Click on thumbnail to enlarge...
elcamino Jun 16th, 06, 06:22 AM Appears to be an 8, so that means 1978 model year truck but none of my books indicate 1978 usage for TDT so I cannot tell you anything more about it.
It cannot be a 1968, the suffixs were 2 digits long
It cannot be a 1988, years are shown as letters after 1979 and 1988 would be I (i).
You will need to find a casting number on the block and that should tell us the common use for that casting.
The Beerboy Jun 16th, 06, 06:40 AM elcamino, you are the man. Can I locate the casting no. on the back of the block w/ the engine in the car, and tranny hooked up? I was under the impression it was only legible with the engine out of the car. Where should I specifically look?
The Beerboy Jun 18th, 06, 06:15 PM OK, have the casting no.:
39GM
3970010
Has a clock in the casting. No date code that I see between clock and casting no.
According to nastyz28 {http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html}
1968 3970010 327 - - 2 A
1969-79 3970010 350 185 370 2 or 4 car, truck, Vette
I'm still confused! Year? Application?
The Beerboy Jun 18th, 06, 06:58 PM OK, found date code on passenger side. VERY tough to read. I think it's:
CE 5 8
Where the C may be a G, and the 8 may have a 0 after it.
elcamino Jun 19th, 06, 06:37 AM 1978 casting date.
That is not a C, it parts of the small oblong raised stamp pad.
E - Month cast code for May
5 - day
80 - year is 1980, which fits a 1981 model. Note trucks often start production in last part of July after the 2 week GM wide shutdown.
All engines with 3 digits siffix codes (TDT) are from 1970 forward.
btw-Don't assume what you find on the net or in books is 100% accurate. Many sites copied the data from books and books have errors and omissions. This is a 350 truck engine used in a 1981 Chevy truck that rolled of the line in Oshawa Ontario Canada. My 2004 GMC truck was built in the same place. They build lots of Chevy cars and trucks for sale in the US.
The Beerboy Jun 19th, 06, 06:49 AM 1978 casting date.

Thanks, elcamino! I NEVER would have figured that one out. Tricky block!! :)
So the block was cast in '78, stamped with TDT in '80, then installed in '81 model truck??

This right?
JohnZ Jun 22nd, 06, 04:48 PM E 5 8 = May 5, 1978 (the 010 block wasn't used after 1979); it's out of a 1978 truck built at Oshawa.
