If the original radio is still in the car and speaker wire is still sodered (I'm sure I mispelled that) to the dash speaker, why won't it work? The light comes on the radio but nothing. Would the speaker be toast being original?

Also, can I hook up an AM/FM radio antenna to the am radio in the car?

The radio may just be bad. The output transistors on those always had a short life. Take a 9V battery and connect it to the speaker leads for a second. It should "pop". If it doesn't the speaker is bad. Sure, you can hook up an AM/FM antenna to it. But with AM, longer is better.

Thank you, I'll try it out.
