: Why does my paint keep checking the finish?

Hello again,

I just painted my inner fender wells with Krylon semi gloss black paint. Needless to say at looks terrific. Everything was taken down to bare metal and primed first and painted. While working in the engine compartment I nicked some of the paint off the inner fender well and decided to touch it up. After cleaning the surface, I began to apply the paint. As I applied the paint it kept checking (spider webbing check cracks) the finish. I can’t figure out what is causing this? I also tried touching up the firewall and got the same checking. Any thoughts as to what I need to do to prevent this, or why is this happening?
Thanks, Joe

hey check the instructions on the back some of the high heat paints and others have recoat periods and once your over that time, you have to wait a curing period before doing anything, most of the time it 30 days, unless you want to strip it all off then you could start over,a friend painted a dirt bike muffler and the next day he wanted to touch it up and it spidered nasty, anyway i would check that out , more than likely that is what is going on, goodluck let us know

Like BB said, you need to check the recoat window. The strong solvents in the Krylon are actually lifting the paint film off itself. Have to wait until it is totally cured before touching up again.

...or if it needs to be done in a short time period, apply extremly dry coats(many)letting it flash good between.
